Job Description

Position Overview

The Library Director reports to the Vice-President of instruction and is an integral position at Red Rocks
Community College providing leadership in library services to support learning, instructions, and the
pursuit of academic research. The position is responsible for creating a learner-centered environment,
building interactive relationships with faculty, and RRCC staff and students. The position is responsible
for keeping the institutions library services current by staying abreast of trends in academic libraries,
educational technologies, and social media.

Responsibilities

Creates an inviting environment where learners are encouraged to ask questions, conduct research, and
work on academic projects. Provides necessary learning resources for students to achieve assignments and
goals. 

Provides formal and informal instruction to students and collaborates effectively with faculty on the use
of library resources and copyright issues. Provides instruction on information literacy and comprehensive
research techniques. Directs library functions including: Collection and development of print,
audiovisual, mobile computing, digital audiovisual recording and online resources. Manages the deselection
of outdated materials. Serves as subject matter expert for collection development. Develops
and manages library budget.

Develops and maintains internet resources including Web sites, online research resources, library catalog,
article databases, internet-based communications and helpdesk functions for learners. Works with library staff to monitor the performance of the Integrated Library System (ILS), cataloging, processing, purchasing, and circulation. Supervises library staff.

Conducts annual employee performance evaluations while encouraging professional growth and job-satisfaction. Coordinates the continued training and development of library staff members. Restructures staffing patterns as necessary. Evaluates the effectiveness of library services and learning resources by monitoring purposeful patronage circulation statistics, online usage statistics, qualitative data on learner experiences and the quality of services provided. Collaborates with Concurrent Enrollment High Schools instructors and students to ensure access to library services. Works with Colorado Community College System (CCCS) Online to ensure the same level of access to library services. Represents library interests in college-wide, System-wide and state-wide groups and functions. Monitors and acts on national trends and legislation pertaining to library resources. Works closely with Instructional Services, Student Services, and Administrative Services on new initiatives.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications and Competencies: MLIS, MSIS or equivalent degree with a minimum of three years of demonstrated progressive experience in an academic library, to include experience supervising, training, and/or directing the work of staff members and managing budget/grants. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated ability to use Word, Excel, and Adobe software in daily work. Ability to collaborate with diverse student and employee groups to create synergies across the institution. Demonstrated record of creating a learner-friendly library while leveraging existing and emerging educational technologies to enhance library and information services. Ability to implement, and support a comprehensive digital library collection.

Preferred Qualifications and Competencies: Experience working in a community college setting. Experience working with LMS, “Desire2Learn”, or similar information technologies. Demonstrated ability to design and develop internet resources to support learners.
