Job Description

-Manages assigned staff; prioritizes and assigns tasks and projects; disciplines, trains and evaluates staff; counsels, coaches and instructs employees as required; develops staff skills; and conducts performance evaluations -Provides support, direction and coaching to subordinate employees in the areas of customer service, problem resolution, planning, and work assignments. -Prepares special and recurring reports, and recommends and implements changes to existing policies and procedures. -Monitors and reviews trends in library practices and functions, and recommends operational and policy improvements. -Provides confidential reference service and readers advisory to the general public; administers secondary level reference service to other branches; retrieves, evaluates, and assists with topics such as public school assignments, health topics, and government and legal matters. -Plans and provides instruction on the use of the library’s online automated catalog, specialized computer database systems, Internet use, and information retrieval and searching techniques; assists patrons with reference and general questions; responds to public complaints and suggestions regarding service and collection; and schedules the use of library facilities by the community, such as rooms. -Conducts program planning for all ages of customers; participates in collection development activities; manages removal of outdated material from shelves and electronic databases; examines resource and collection materials and selects new materials for circulation; coordinates with vendors; and receives and evaluates book donations and other materials from the public. -Performs administrative duties; controls book trust donations; receives and records donations; maintains a record of titles purchased for each donation; and reviews and organizes materials received from public for display and use. -Attends and participates in a variety of meetings, workshops and training sessions; coordinates and schedules book discussion group meetings, establishes agendas; selects titles to read, and prepares discussion questions; facilitates meetings; and represents Butte County on regional library system committees. -Conducts public relations functions; plans, organizes, and implements programs to reach community; prepares press releases, appears on public radio service broadcasts, and speaks before the community; visits schools, distributes flyers, and attends community events; identifies grant opportunities and prepares grant application for submittal; administers grants; and plans and develops fund raising events. -Coordinates facilities maintenance; requests building repairs and general maintenance; manages renovation efforts of branch floor plan design; and updates programs or automated needs. -Performs other related duties as assigned.

The Community

The Butte County Library system includes a bookmobile and six branch libraries, located in Biggs, Chico, Durham, Gridley, Oroville, and Paradise. As a result of budget expansions, all six branches will be adding staff and hours in the fall of 2007. This Branch Librarian position will be based at the Gridley Branch Library, and will oversee operations of that branch, as well as the Biggs and Durham branches. With a population just over 5,000, Gridley is a fast-growing agricultural community. Gridley is conveniently located to many outdoor recreation opportunities, and is also just over an hour’s drive north of Sacramento. The Gridley Branch Library houses a collection of about 20,000 items, including books, videos, DVDs, music CDs, and books on tape and CD. Dozens of subscriptions to magazines, newspapers and journals provide current information. A number of online resources are available 24/7 to any resident with a library card through the Butte County Library web site at http://www.buttecounty.net/bclibrary, where users can also search the Library’s holdings or place online requests for items. The Gridley Branch also provides children’s story times and other entertaining and educational programs. A free public meeting room is available, and the Library provides free public access to the Internet and word processing programs.
