Job Description

JOB SUMMARY: Under the general direction of the Adult Services Supervisor, performs responsible professional reference work. Provides reference service and reader’s advisory to patrons of all ages as well as instruction in the use of materials in all formats. Assists with collection development, staffing of virtual reference, and grant writing. Performs other work as required. Schedule will include some evenings and weekends. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: • Assists patrons in locating general and reference resources including electronic information databases. • Instructs patrons in search strategies and the use of information resources. • Provides individual instruction in the use of public computers, the Internet, and other technologies. • Assists patrons in locating reading materials that may be of interest to them using the Library’s Reader’s Advisory collection, the NoveList database, and other resources. • Prepares bibliographies and other instructional material as needed. • Along with other Adult Services staff, reviews and recommends general reading and reference materials for the library’s collection in a variety of formats, including print, audiovisual, and electronic. • Manages and monitors collections to ensure they are current, accurate, and relevant. Manages appropriate portions of the acquisitions budget. • Assists with the development of grant proposals. • Shares responsibility for staffing AskColorado, the State’s virtual reference service. • Assists with displays and programs for the Adult Services Department. • Participates in activities of professional library organizations. • Maintains postings and filings of City materials in the Library. EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Completion of a Master's degree program at an American Library Association accredited college or university with major course work in Library Science; two years experience as a professional librarian in a municipal, academic, special, or school library; or any equivalent combination of acceptable training, education and experience. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: • Knowledge of the principles and practices of public library service. • Knowledge of automated library systems and equipment. • Knowledge of collection development principles. • Knowledge of individual learning styles. • Knowledge of cataloging principles, MARC formats, Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) 21, and Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). • Skill in the use of a personal computer and various application programs. • Skill in searching library databases, ACLIN, cataloging utilities, and the Internet. • Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing. • Ability to instruct adults and children in the use of the Internet and the library’s electronic databases and programs. • Ability to develop user guides and bibliographies. • Ability to assist patrons in locating information and materials. • Ability to retain and respect the privacy of individual users. • Ability to plan and conduct library programs. • Ability to exercise considerable initiative and judgment. SPECIAL LICENSE, REGISTRATION, OR CERTIFICATE REQUIRED: None PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to read, speak, and hear. The employee is frequently required to sit and use hands, fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly fit and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed in the library. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate. WORKERS' COMPENSATION CLASSIFICATION: 8810 FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt
