Job Description

  • Responsible for supervising, training and monitoring the work of Youth Services technicians, clerks, and volunteers as assigned.
  • Works independently without close supervision to plan, organize and execute job assignments.
  • Instructs patrons with using online registration for group visits and tours.  Develops age-appropriate training for using online databases, current technology, and juvenile collections to meet the education, recreation, and information needs of the community.
  • Develops, promotes, and coordinates with assigned staff to present programs, including summer reading programs, to children ages 0 through tween.
  • Conducts daily meetings with assigned staff and adjusts communication methods as needed to achieve optimal results.
  • Coordinates with other library departments as needed in planning and presenting various topics to others in library or teaching professions.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of programs and adjusts content and/or structure of programs accordingly.
  • Collects data and statistics regarding Youth Services programs for reporting purposes.
  • Selects materials for the development of the juvenile collections in all formats, such as print, non-print, and downloadable content.  Makes recommendations regarding age-appropriate databases.
  • Works with assigned staff to promote the library’s collections, programs, and services, including but not limited to developing displays, updating events calendars and website, and preparing reading lists.
  • Provides age-appropriate reference and information services via the Youth Services desk, including walk-in, telephone, and electronic delivery.
  • Attends professional meetings and conferences and conveys ideas and information to library staff upon returning.
  • Interprets goals, objectives and policies of the library to library staff and to the general public.
  • Participates in grant writing processes as assigned.
  • May perform duties in other areas of the library or outreach locations as assigned.
  • Understands and follows written and/or verbal instructions.
  • Participates in and attends staff trainings, daily shows, programs, and other training sessions of the library.
  • Must be available to work a varied schedule including evenings, weekends and some holidays.
  • Attendance is an essential function of this position.
  • Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City.
  • Complies with all library procedures and policies, and the City guidelines, rules, regulations, procedures, and policies.
  • May serve as a member of employee committees, as required or assigned.
  • May represent the library on various community or professional bodies, as required or assigned.
