Job Description

Fiction and more fiction – do you know the titles that make up the New York Times bestsellers’ list versus the regional bestsellers? Can you pick out those great mid-level and debut authors that you know your patrons will love? Do you understand the part that patron demand plays in selecting books? Do you understand the role non-fiction titles have in a library, from what we really need to support all areas of the collection, to what the patrons always want, to what students need, to picking out the bestsellers across all categories? Do you understand and support the role that weeding plays in maintaining a vibrant and well circulating collection? If so this may be the job for you! Jefferson County Public Library seeks a vibrant, innovative and dynamic librarian to do collection development for adult materials: books, large print, books on disc, e-books, and e-audio. This position calls for an individual with a passion for collecting the perfect books for adult patrons that will meet their research, informational and recreational needs. The ideal candidate will help build an exemplary and well circulating collection that supports the vision of Imagine JCPL - a new service model. The successful candidate will effectively partner with staff in other collection units and in the libraries to ensure that the best materials are being chosen for Jefferson County Public Library patrons.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Essential duties include, but are not limited to:
Knowledge of adult books, both fiction and non-fiction.
Knowledge of publishing trends.
Knowledge of weeding standards.
Ability to translate the needs and interests of our adult patrons into materials for our collection.
Stays current on trends in library services and materials to adults.
Participates with others in cross-functional teams to accomplish goals and objectives.
Maintain a flexible schedule, able to work some evenings weekends, holidays.
SKILLS:
· Skill in the use of standard library methods and principles in bibliography, cataloging, classification, circulation, digital services, content creation, and reference services. Ability to assign, train, and direct staff.
· Ability to maintain clerical records, and to compile reports from these records.
· Ability to instruct patrons and library staff in the use of computer programs and library reference materials.
· Ability to effectively express ideas orally and in writing.
· Ability to make oral and digital program presentations before large groups of people.
· Ability to plan, direct and supervise the work of subordinate employees and volunteers.
· Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment in applying standards to a variety of work situations.
· Ability to exercise tact, courtesy, and firmness in frequent contact with library patrons and the general public.
· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
· Resolve customer service issues, including handling situations with law enforcement and first responders.
· Skill in communicating and promoting library services
KNOWLEDGE:
Considerable knowledge of the library’s computer system and content management principles.
Considerable knowledge of books, magazines and related materials available to the public.
General knowledge of the reading levels and interests of County residents.
General knowledge of literature appropriate for juveniles, young adults and adult patrons.
General knowledge of audio visual media available to the public.
General knowledge of the principles of supervision, organization and administration.
Some knowledge of the current literature, trends and developments in the field of library science.
Must be available to work some evenings, weekends and holidays.
