Job Description

Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Director of Library Services, the Assistant Librarian maintains a library environment for learning and discovery providing professional reference services, in-person and distance education library instruction, and outreach activities. The Assistant Librarian is also responsible for ensuring coordination and oversight of the Test Center and Help Desk and Circulation Desk Operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Provide professional reference services and library instruction to include actively engaging with library patrons to identify needs and interests, analyzing patrons’ requests and assist with furnishing, or locating appropriate resources. 
2. Instruct users on performing searches and use of the most effective resource and search technique for their question and interest level. Embedded library instruction includes in-person instruction as well as distance education outreach, through Moodle (our learning management system).
3. Oversee library patron service operations and responsibilities regarding the circulation desk including inter-library loans, various collections, cash drawer, printer/copier, technology/education materials and campus-wide lost and found. Employ the correct policy and procedure regarding each transaction within each area of responsibility. Provide appropriate telephone, on-line, and in person customer service. Manage overdue processes and updated and manage this area’s procedure manual.
4. Oversee Help Desk operations to include assisting patrons in person, phone, and email with CWC and My Central website navigation, account access issues, Moodle questions and varied technology problems while following FERPA regulations, and training student employees with all of the above. Coordinate with IT and Distance Education to determine and implement the appropriate procedures and processes and to update and manage this area’s procedure manual.
5. Serve as the library services department’s distance education and outreach liaison. Coordinate with the Distance Education department to provide backup services for the college’s learning management system. Train librarians and library staff on backup services, processes and procedures. Coordinate and collaborate with the librarians to standardize librarian services for distance education students and faculty.
6. Create and establish gold standard access to our on-line resources. Contribute to the development of the Library’s on-line presence. Develop, maintain and troubleshoot information access aids such as web pages, social media, electronic pathfinders, software programs, databases, on-line tutorials, and LibGuides. Collaborate with librarians, faculty, and CWCstaff to create, assess, revise, and maintain access to resources.
7. Recruit, supervise, and schedule student employees in collaboration with the other librarians. Identify library tasks and work activity assignments, as well as provide initial and ongoing training and evaluation. Resolve problems and retrain as needed. Coordinate student projects given by other library staff. Serve as backup for students.
8. Coordinate and oversee the Test Center. Serve as the primary proctor and scheduler of all tests when Test Center Assistant is unavailable. Coordinate daily schedule with the Test Center Assistant. Collaborates with Test Center Assistant to establish new tests as necessary. Inform and advise a variety of CWC stakeholders about Test Center exams and operations and collaborate with colleagues on the state-wide committee as well as stay current on nationwide test center standards.
9. Coordinate library exhibits, programming and community outreach activities. Advertise library services and resources and solicit feedback. Plan library displays, programming, and community outreach activities coordinating with the library team. Work with the Director of Library Services on advertising. Communicate with patrons to determine service needs or resources. Support CWC academic and support service programs, as well as local, regional, and national events through library programming.
10. Participate in library collection development. Analyze the depth and breadth of the collections to ensure quality and standards are meeting current teaching, educational, and information needs of the CWC community, while adequately meeting national community college standards. 
11. Function as Faculty Liaison with assigned subject areas. Communicate with and provide outreach to assigned subject area faculty.
12. Manage and present library statistics. Compile statistics to prepare national statistical reports and provide information and updates to the Director of the Library. Work with and train the library Testing Center Assistant, who gathers the statistics into spreadsheets.
13. Operate within the guidelines set forth in the College’s policies, procedures and practices.
14. Perform other reasonably related duties as directed or assigned.

Education

Master of Library Science (MLS), Master of Librarianship, Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS), or other master’s degree accredited by the American Library Association from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

10. General knowledge of academic libraries, especially of the role of the library in a community college setting.
11. General knowledge of CWC policies, procedures and practices.
12. Knowledge of the various collections according to library standard organization systems.
