Job Description

Pikes Peak Library District, a recognized leader in technology innovation, seeks a forward-thinking Technology Leader to continue to build the platform for delivery of exceptional 21st century library services to the 607,000 residents in El Paso County.

As a member of the Leadership Team, participates in developing recommendations for overall system objectives and policies and is responsible for identifying leading-edge technology strategies that will enable the Library to accomplish its strategic initiatives.  This position orchestrates the entire District’s IT functions (including telecommunications, telephony, network servers and end-points) into a cohesive system.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Working directly with the Leadership Team, develops, recommends, implements, monitors, and communicates Information Technology plans that align with the PPLD strategic plan; complies to all  policies and procedures approved by the Board of Trustees.
  • Oversees all information technology for the library system including but not limited to the Integrated Library System, an enterprise level Microsoft platform, VmWare server clusters, MSSQL and MySQL databases, Microsoft exchange, network telecommunications, VOIP, web site/online borrowing interface, IT system security, data management, printers, audio-visual equipment, RFID equipment, provision of free Wi-Fi, location-based analytics and services, cloud computing, and disaster recovery.
  • Evaluates the operations of the computer systems throughout the District and recommends to the Leadership Team the appropriate configurations of hardware, software, and procedures needed for smooth operation of the library’s computer and telephone systems to meet patron needs.
  • Selects, trains, supervises and evaluates IT staff, including performance goals and measures; analyzes training needs for supervised  staff; works collaboratively with the District Training Project Supervisor to schedule and execute needed training programs; encourages professional development of supervised staff through participation in professional organizations. 
  • Conducts technical feasibility studies for automation projects working District-wide in appropriate design, development, implementation, and maintenance of specific hardware and software
  • Evaluates, recommends, and approves all department-specific computer systems: oversees implementation of necessary equipment.
  • Recommends on-line networking solutions and supervises installation and maintenance of all hardware, software, and data communications equipment; coordinates all decisions pertaining to the optimum user of equipment and software.
  • Prepares budget requests and assumes budgeting responsibility for the IT function throughout the Library District; prepares RFPs and bids, analyzes and recommends bid decisions to appropriate leadership.
  • Maintains awareness of District activities and their impact on other District entities; effectively communicates pertinent District information to department.
  • Responsible for compliance with Software Publishers of America (SPA) regulations and other software licenses.
  • Remains current on IT and Library trends; consults with other IT and Library experts as necessary.
  • Coordinates the management and supervision of all outside contracts related to IT with the Finance Office.
  • Represents the District to community agencies and professional IT or other related library groups; may attend special library functions; serves on state and regional professional committees.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Additional Info & Requirements

    • Requires a minimum of seven years of experience in an IT environment
    • Requires a minimum of four years in a managerial or supervisory role; demonstrated ability to supervise IT staff
    • Knowledge of current and emerging technology including library technology systems and networks, security and infrastructure, systems integration, email, internet, databases (MS SQL, MySQL), e-Media,  application software; knowledge of data and voice communication
    • Experience in planning and managing large complex IT projects and budgeting required
    • Ability to communicate with a wide variety of people using easy-to-understand technical terminology about IT related concepts, ideas, and requirements
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work in a team environment, a “whatever it takes” work ethic, and an excellent customer service attitude
    • Requires a valid Colorado driver’s license or ability to obtain one
    • Requires ability to use a personal vehicle (with mileage reimbursement based on Federal regulations) to travel between library locations as necessary
