Job Description

LIBRARY CUSTOMER SERVICE ASSISTANT, COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPT, LIBRARY DIV.   15-0550
REGULAR PART-TIME. MON.-WED. EVENINGS AND WEEKENDS. APPROX. 20-24 HRS/WK.

Under the supervision of the Library Director performs direct customer service, safety and intervention work in the public areas of the Library. Collaborates with the Library staff to effectively resolve or reduce problems, issues, conflicts, and concerns relating to patron and staff safety. Works directly with patrons to address disruptive behavior and/or policy and procedure violations.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES: Generally maintain a positive environment in the library by directing customers who appear to need direction, assisting patrons with using the self-checkout system, and distributing brochures or information to explain policies and procedures. Interact tactfully and deal fairly with all patrons, including individuals from diverse socioeconomic, racial and ethnic backgrounds, abilities, lifestyles, ages and gender. Effectively intervene with patrons participating in noisy and disruptive activities. Assist staff in handling difficult patron situations. Correct obvious problems in the restrooms and other parts of the building. Enforce applicable Library policies and procedures regarding patron behavior. Insure adherence to library rules such as restrictions on food, drink, and smoking. Provide assistance to library staff in handling difficult patron behavior. Make recommendations about staff training. Perform regular walk-throughs of all public areas of the Library to ensure these areas are safe for customers and staff. Provide information and assistance to Library patrons and staff who have concerns regarding safety or security issues. Educate Library patrons regarding appropriate behavior. Identify areas of potential problems or unsafe conditions. Make recommendations for corrective actions and assist with implementation. Prepare written incident reports detailing safety or security problems in the Library. Issue written or verbal reports to Library staff regarding such problems as needed. Call for police assistance with customers participating in vandalism, theft, or threatening behavior and those who refuse to comply with Library policies and procedures.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed primarily in the public areas of a standard public library facility. Requires the ability to move about the building on a regular and periodic basis. Work schedule requires that duties be performed during evenings and weekends. Work requires occasional contact with individuals that might pose a threat to the safety of others. Requires the ability to visually observe patron behavior.
