Job Description

Provide an enthusiastic, approachable presence at the Lafayette Public Library service desks; promote books and reading to library customers of all ages; help to plan and conduct programs that promote literacy skills and develop reader’s services; and assist in the development and maintenance of our excellent collection of books , e-resources, and audiovisual materials.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS    The following duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive.

  • Assist adults, teens, and children with material selection in the library;
  • Plan and conduct library programs for children and teens
  • Accurately answer customers’ questions for educational and recreational needs using the resources of the library. Questions are answered in person, on the telephone or electronically
  • Assist individuals and groups in locating and obtaining library materials; explain and assist with the use of equipment and reference sources, including the online catalog, automated reference tools, the Internet, printers, etc., and new technologies as they evolve.
  • Promote reading, books, and library services through displays, readers advisory, programs, booklists, etc.
  • Assist with selection of materials for the collection.
  • Plan and arrange workload and establish priorities to complete assigned work within parameters and deadlines assigned by supervisor.
  • Maintain records of programs and services as required.;
  • Participate in professional activities.
  • Complete special projects as assigned
  • Train volunteers & staff in techniques and procedures.
  • Keep current on library trends and technology
  • Perform related work as required and assigned.
