Job Description

Do you love libraries? Do you have a passion for helping children to love reading? The Arapahoe Libraries is seeking a Children's Librarian to join the Child and Family Library Services team in our progressive library system. The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge and passion for early childhood literacy, excellent communication and technology skills, and a track record of creativity, innovation and success working with children and families. Location: Koelbel Library, district-wide resource

Reports to: Supervisor, Early Literacy

Position:  Full-time, exempt

Pay Rate: $40,400.00 - $60,640.00 annually, plus benefits   

Role: With the Child and Family Services team, develops and implements early literacy-based initiatives, and services aimed at children ages 0-5 and their parents and caregivers.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

70% EARLY CHILDHOOD SERVICES DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION

  • Identifies, recommends and creates early literacy services including, but not limited to:
    • Ongoing early childhood content creation for digital and print communications
    • Monitoring and providing input for early literacy spaces, including supporting the management of developmentally appropriate, educational early childhood materials for spaces and programs
    • Providing advanced children's reference and reader's advisory services, recommending resources and employing search strategies in order to satisfy patron requests

20% PROGRAMS   

  • Identifies, recommends and implements recurring early literacy programs focused on the needs of targeted populations such as diverse ESL families with young children

10% MENTORSHIP

  • Supports Child and Family Library Services team and Arapahoe Libraries paraprofessional staff through trainings, reader's and app advisory, and children's area floor and program support in order to provide outstanding library service to internal and external customers

Qualifications:

MLS or MLIS, required.

Two to five years of similar or related experience, required.

Understanding of early literacy and developmentally appropriate practices, required.

Knowledge of Every Child Ready to Read and Family Place Libraries philosophies, required.

Experience and confidence in developing and conducting effective storytimes and other children's programs, including working very confidently with parents, caregivers and diverse populations.

Ability to periodically work weekends and evenings, required.

Confidence in working successfully on a team, required.

Advanced technology skills for Windows, Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, and Outlook, required.

Intermediate skills in Sierra, preferred.

Ability to be mobile 100% of the time and sit as needed; ability to bend, stoop, reach, and push a loaded book cart weighing up to 100 pounds.

Ability to exercise confidence and creativity in developing effective early literacy messaging for both online and print sources.

Ability to adhere to Arapahoe Libraries core competencies including dedication to providing courageous leadership, outstanding customer service, professionalism, communication, adaptability, accountability.

Established in 1966, the Arapahoe Library District serves more than 200,000 residents living in Arapahoe County. Arapahoe County and other major suburban counties make up the greater metropolitan area surrounding Denver, Colorado. The Arapahoe Library District operates eight branch libraries, including mobile library services, and a library at the County Detention Center, funded by the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Department. A seven-member Board of Trustees sets the library budget and determines policy.
