Job Description

The Library Assistant oversees the operation of the library's circulation and reserves department and supervises student assistants on assigned nights and weekends. This individual supervises student workers in operation of the circulation and reserves systems while training and assigning work, shelving and shifting books, newspapers and periodicals, filing microfiche and maintaining orderliness of library while screening, answering or referring inquiries, both in person and by phone and online, as appropriate and assists patrons with reference questions when reference librarian is busy or not on duty. The Library Assistant will process materials for two reserve systems while explaining and enforcing reserve policies and providing oversight of the library during scheduled hours in the absence of the Dean, Access Services Manager, Information Services Librarian, Reference Librarian and Access Services Coordinator. This person will instruct patrons on locating books, periodicals and government documents using the online catalog and has responsibilities such as: opening and closing the library, preparing computers, Santos collection and cash drawer accordingly, insuring patron safety by identifying emergency situations and notifying authorities other patrons, as well as monitoring alarm systems for library collections and building security and communicating with appropriate security personnel when necessary.

Additional Info & Requirements

Schedule is Monday through Thursday evening and closing shifts. A High school diploma and previous experience working with the public required. Successful candidates will have evidence of excellent communication skills, both oral and written, the ability to maintain poise while effectively managing a multi-task operation, demonstrated ability to supervise student workers, the ability to work effectively with a diverse clientele and have effective computer skills. Prior experience with a circulation module of an automated library system preferred.
