Job Description

 Performs administrative, supervisory and professional work planning, coordinating and directing the activities of the Lafayette Public Library and oversee the management of the City of Lafayette website.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties are illustrative only and not intended to be all inclusive.

Develops the organizational structure, including lines of authority, responsibility and communication for the department in order to carry out policy and goals of the City; revises the organizational structure as required. Plans, coordinates, supervises and evaluates the activities of the Lafayette Public Library. Oversee the management of the City of Lafayette website. Identifies Library needs of the community; provides leadership necessary to assure the Library is meeting those needs; works with the Library Board to formulate policies and priorities of library service. Develops and institutes systems and procedures relative to the operation of the Library. Prepares, administers and implements the annual Library budget and exercises control over expenditures of budget and funds. Prepares and submits reports to the City Administrator, Library Board, and City Council regarding departmental activities as required. Coordinate projects of mutual interest with other departments, libraries or agencies. Responsible for library facilities (e.g., reporting damage, repairs needed and unsatisfactory cleaning). Attend conferences, workshops and meetings to keep abreast of current trends in the field. Oversee selections and orders of library materials. Perform related work as required and assigned

KNOWLEDGE: Thorough knowledge of principles, practices, purposes, scope and techniques of planning and administering a library; Working knowledge of the principles and practices of public administration.

ABILITY: Ability to supervise and coordinate the activities of a complex organization; Ability  to exercise sound judgment, evaluate situations and make decisions; Ability to administer, plan and direct comprehensive programs; Ability to discern trends and affect change through gathering, evaluating and interpreting statistical data; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to plan, assign, coordinate, direct and evaluate the work of subordinates; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, City officials and the public. Ability to create and maintain positive staff relationships; Ability to lead effectively by example, to inspire staff, and to promote enthusiastic teamwork; Ability to demonstrate positive attitude, cultural sensitivity, and a sense of humor in working with customers, coworkers, and community; Ability to creatively solve problems, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner; Ability to demonstrate innovation and flexibility
