Job Description

Plan, organize, and direct activities in the Adult Services / Reference Department including quality control, service responsiveness, materials, and program development.

Supervise public reference desk activities and serve at the reference desks by providing direct services to patrons.

Exercises direct supervision over assigned staff including evaluating performance, enhancing employee development and skill building, training, and recommending employee actions as required.

Schedule and ensure proper staff coverage of customer service desks in assigned section for all shifts including evenings and weekends.

Participate in the selection process to hire new staff members including analyzing organizational needs, selection criteria, and interviewing best candidates.

Prepare written reports and documents in support of major Library programs and functions.

Direct use and development of information technology applications appropriate for assigned section of materials to meet the customer service needs of the Library.

Direct collection development; preparing a collection development plan, selecting books and materials for an assigned portion of the collection, and managing a portion of the acquisitions budget.

Provide training opportunities and development in internal operational procedures for staff as required.

Assist in budget and policy development for section and the Library including routine monitoring of budget status and modification of spending as required.

Perform job duties and other collaborative efforts in pursuit of City values and major organizational goals. Maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the public.

Respond to and resolve customer inquiries and complaints related to personnel and/or Library services.

Serve as a duty supervisor on a rotating schedule to provide facility, functional, and operational supervision coverage on evenings and weekends.

Assist and instruct patrons in the use of computer software programs and the Internet.

Participate in and represent the library on citywide and community committees.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Work is primarily performed in a standard office and library environment. Work involves the ability to move throughout the building, reaching to access materials on shelves, light to moderate lifting/carrying (up to 49 pounds), pulling/pushing, twisting, kneeling, squatting, and bending/stooping. Visual and physical capabilities to work on computers and associated equipment are required. Requires skill in working productively both independently and in groups, communicating effectively with co-workers and public, reading documents, customer contact, problem solving, math, detailed work, and performing multiple concurrent tasks. Irregular work schedule required including days, evenings, Saturdays and Sundays.

Selection process will include complete job description review, personal interview, background investigation, criminal background check, and substance screening.
