MONROE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY — In Beautiful BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR

Inspire, lead, innovate… The Associate Director at Monroe County Public Library will embrace and promote these ideas as they lead a committed customer experience group who delivers innovative programs and services. The ideal candidate must be knowledgeable about emerging trends in libraries and passionate about providing responsive, high quality customer service. S/he must be a thought leader who excels in interpersonal communication and collaborative leadership as well as day-to-day operational and organizational skills.

The Associate Director leads the Customer Experience Group through a team of senior level direct reports, and serves as a member of the Library’s Leadership Team. This position contributes to formulation of short and long-range planning, program development, evaluation, and provides input into allocation of resources in support of the Library’s strategic initiatives.

The Associate Director possesses a skill set and interest in space management, building projects or renovation, and deep understanding of Library administration. This position assumes the leadership and duties of the director in the director’s absence for approximately 170 staff, serving the vibrant community of Monroe County’s 142,000 citizens, with an operating budget of $8.45 million. This position requires a Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited university; a minimum of five years progressive supervision/management experience in a library, including supervision of professional staff.

Additional Info & Requirements

Board of Trustee work session and monthly meeting are held on the second and third Wednesday of the month.

Very Occasional evening and weekend hours for special events and other participation needs as necessary.

  • Ability to recognize and define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and implement changes when necessary. 
  • Ability to work independently and as a team. 
  • Excellent knowledge of current and new library and business technology with an interest in identifying improved tools and skills to implement and use new applications.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills and ability to work within tight timeframes and simultaneously manage several projects.
  • Proven skills in leading staff through change and influencing positive outcomes.
  • Proficiency in evaluation and assessment; ability to apply data analysis findings in support of enhancing library services.
  • Ability to effectively write reports, procedural documents, and to gather and present information effectively to diverse groups or stakeholders.
