Job Description

The Access Services Librarian, an exempt staff position, is responsible for managing the onsite Circulation, Course Reserve, and Stacks Management aspects of the Reed Library to support the evolving information, research, and library facility needs of Fort Lewis College students, faculty, and staff and the surrounding community. The Access Services Librarian leads a work group consisting of three Library Technicians (full-time classified staff) and 15-20 student employees. The Fort Lewis College integrated library system (ILS) is part of the Marmot Library Network, which includes a shared catalog. The Access Services Librarian oversees the circulation and reserve modules of III Sierra, including patron records, Banner data loads, circulation records, missing/lost items, billing, course reserve, loan rules, notices, and reports.  The Access Services Department is charged with delivering front desk coverage for all hours the library is open as well as managing the physical collections. The Access Services Librarian may be called upon to resolve patron service difficulties (account eligibility and registration, assessing fees for damaged and lost items, negotiating payment of fines and fees, etc.).  The department is responsible for generating data to be used as a strategic tool, including research and reports as needed. 

The Access Services Librarian shares duties with other librarians such as acting as a liaison to assigned academic departments, performing collection development in specific subjects, delivering information literacy instruction for Composition classes and bibliographic instruction for assigned departments, and providing reference service (in person, chat, and email). Regular evening and weekend shifts may be required. Under the direction of the Library Director, all librarians participate in shared–governance groups such as Librarians Council and Budget Team. The Access Services Librarian leads the Space Team which has responsibility for configuring the library’s stacks and study areas to best meet the needs of FLC students, participates in the Marmot Library Network Access Services Committee, and represents the department and the library on other campus and consortial committees as assigned.

The Reed Library is an active and highly collaborative environment. This position actively collaborates with partners inside and beyond the library, including:

  • Marmot libraries on circulation issues
  • Instruction / Reference Librarian on Outreach activities
  • Technical Services Librarian on ILS
  • Collection Management Librarian on stacks / collections and replacements
  • Resource Sharing / Reciprocal Borrowing on circulation issues
  • Branch libraries on circulation and stacks
  • Faculty members regarding Course Reserve and Faculty Delivery

Required Qualifications

  • M.L.S. / M.L.I.S. from an ALA accredited institution.
  • At least two years academic library experience in a professional position.
  • Ability to provide leadership in a team environment while developing and maintaining effective interpersonal relationships with department staff and student workers.
  • Significant supervisory experience, including hiring, training, and evaluating staff and student employees.
  • Experience providing reference service and library instruction in an academic library.
  • Experience in academic library collection development.
  • Proven record of working both independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to respond effectively to changing needs and competing priorities showing initiative, flexibility, and a desire for process improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate and implement projects and programs in a technology-rich environment and to critically assess their effectiveness.
  • Enthusiasm for seeking and managing change to fulfill the library’s role in supporting the college mission.
  • Capacity to thrive in a dynamic environment, ability to quickly learn new skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills.
  • Commitment to fostering a diverse educational environment and workplace and an ability to work effectively with diverse populations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the Innovative Interfaces Inc. (III) library systems, particularly Sierra.
  • Experience managing circulation, reserve, and stacks management services in an academic library.
  • Experience working in a multi-library consortial environment.
  • Experience conducting formal assessment of library services and facilities.
  • Budgeting and project management experience.
  • Knowledge of trends and issues in access services and related technologies.

Compensation
