Job Description

Role: Manages partnerships, signature events and internal and external marketing/communications for the Library District.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

30%        LEADERSHIP ‑ Inspires and develops a shared vision by challenging existing processes, articulating goals, modeling the way, and enabling and encouraging staff to respond courageously in order to efficiently and effectively support the library district.

30%        DIRECTION ‑ Gives direction by identifying gaps and deficiencies in existing services, making decisions on best practices to be implemented, facilitating input and feedback on how it is best accomplished, and building consensus and support for decisions in order to improve the quality, quantity, cost or time effectiveness for communications, programming and partnership operations.

20%        SUPERVISION ‑ Supervises staff by setting performance objectives, organizing resources and making implementation decisions, coaching and providing feedback, managing conflict and appraising performance in order to optimize the performance of staff.                        

20%        MANAGEMENT ‑ Manages by prioritizing goals and making operational decisions on how to best achieve them, arranging tasks, staff, budget and other resources in order to accomplish the work of the department, implement decisions, and ensure a planned approach to library district communications, programming and partnerships.

Qualifications:

Ten years of similar or related experience, required.

Master’s degree preferred, or a Bachelor’s degree and related experience.

Ability to motivate or influence others is a material part of the job, requiring a significant level of diplomacy and trust. Obtaining cooperation (internally and/or externally) is an important part of the job.

Management Aptitude, including management education and experience; leadership skills; responsibility for outcomes; personal productivity; practical thinking; adaptability; coaching; and, business ethics.

Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and issues affecting compliance in the public sector.

Ability to represent the Library District to outside agencies and the public.

Ability to maintain and convey confidential information.

Ability to create mutually beneficial partnerships with outside agencies.

Ability to capably handle stressful media and event situations.

Ability to serve as Library spokesperson in the event the Executive Director is unavailable.

Knowledge and application of theories in motivation and performance.

Knowledge of principles of communication in the public sector.

Skill in public speaking, media relations, researching market data and gathering public input.

Knowledge of journalism and skill in written communications including writing, editing, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

Knowledge of printing and graphics industry.

Knowledge of desktop publishing and graphics programs.

Ability to apply marketing principles to library operations.

Accredited in Public Relations (APR) designation or other certification of competency in the field of communications, marketing and public relations, preferred.

Intermediate technology skills, including intermediate assessment scores for Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, Windows, PowerPoint, and Outlook, required.

Ability to organize work, determine priorities, handle multiple tasks, manage details, follow‑through and meet deadlines

Ability to travel between facilities and work varying shifts, including evenings and weekends, required.

The Community

Established in 1966, the Arapahoe Library District serves more than 200,000 residents living in Arapahoe County. Arapahoe County and other major suburban counties make up the greater metropolitan area surrounding Denver, Colorado. The Arapahoe Library District operates eight branch libraries, including mobile library services, and a library at the County Detention Center, funded by the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Department. A seven-member Board of Trustees sets the library budget and determines policy.
