Description: Job ID: 6575; Agency: Department of Education; South Dakota State Library Salary: $19.14 - $21.50 per hour Pay Grade: GJ Closing Date: Open Until Filled The Senior Librarian works as a consultant for the State Library and as a liaison for almost 400 schools and school libraries. Administers a state library program through planning, implementation, and coordination with other library programs and public or school libraries, agencies, or states; and provides consultative services to other libraries in the areas of development and operations to ensure the effective delivery of library services and the accomplishment of the goals and objectives of the program. The Ideal Candidate Will Have: Master's degree, bachelor's degree, or minor in Library and Information Management or Library Science; certified and endorsed South Dakota as a school media librarian/specialist preferred; and experience as a practicing school librarian is preferred. Knowledge of: •future-ready library science principles, methods, practices, and systems; •automated information systems and their application to library services; •common automated systems used by school libraries; •online databases, programs and applications and their integration into library programs and services; •computer software programs/applications available for libraries and their integration into library programs and services; •effective methods of consultation and presenting skills; •planning techniques; •national principles and practices of modern librarianship and information systems; •state statutes and regulations regarding library services; •national and state school library and all other content standards; •national standards and federal regulations regarding library services and grants process; •grant program development and administration; •principles of adult learning; •statistics and graphical representations of data; •management of school libraries; •future-ready school library trends and technology. The Community

The State Library is a division of the Department of Education. Our office is located in Pierre in central South Dakota. We are a staff of 23 FTE with three divisions: Access Services and Cataloging, Outreach/Development Services and the Braille and Talking Book program. The state’s total population is just under one million. The State Library supports some 368 school libraries, 23 academic institutions and 112 public libraries in towns ranging in population from a few hundred to two urban areas on each side of the state. Eighty percent of our state is classified as rural. The successful candidate could live in Pierre or a SD city/town of their choosing.  Extensive travel is involved.
