Job Description

BROAD SCOPE OF POSITION: Under limited supervision, performs a broad range of paraprofessional-level tasks related to maintenance of Pikes Peak Library District’s online catalog, including cataloging from copy, original cataloging, item conversion and processing. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Searches online databases for bibliographic records. Using knowledge of cataloging and specific cataloging tools, modifies bibliographic data as needed. Applies independent judgement in determining when records need to be referred to a senior cataloger. 2. Performs copy and limited original cataloging for materials including maps, lithographs, pamphlets, local documents, blueprints, and archives using MARC and other cataloging rules. 3. Verifies new name, subject headings, and series using an authority file. 4. Creates item records and processes items for distribution. 5. Resolves cataloging discrepancies and makes changes or deletions in existing Special Collections catalog data. 6. Assists with documentation of cataloging procedures related to the materials handled. 7. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Additional Info & Requirements

This temporary Senior Cataloging Assistant position is to assist with completion of a cataloging project. The total project is expected to require about 400 hours that can be worked anytime Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. The job is expected to begin September 24, 2007 and ends December 14, 2007. However, the incumbent may choose to work anywhere between 32 and 40 hours per week and has the option to complete the project by November 30 if desired. PREFERRED EXPERIENCE / KNOWLEDGE / ABILITIES: 1. Advanced knowledge of library practices, procedures, and materials. 2. Advanced knowledge of Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC) and Dewey Decimal classification system. 3. Ability to spell accurately, to use proper grammar, and to follow complex written and verbal instructions. 4. Strong detail orientation and excellent proofreading skills. 5. Ability to document bibliographic and computer procedures. 6. Ability to work independently and without close supervision. 7. Ability to operate a personal computer and to perform consistent and accurate data entry. 8. Ability to work well with others in a team environment. 9. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in written form. 10. Ability to type 45+ words per minute accurately. Requires a minimum of 4 years of library copy cataloging and some original cataloging experience. Requires the ability to type 45+ words per minute accurately. Requires excellent communication skills, ability to work in a team environment, a "whatever it takes" work ethic, and an excellent customer service attitude. Bilingual ability is a plus in serving our diverse community.
