Job Description

The Kraemer Family Library at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) seeks applications from energetic, innovative librarians for Assistant Professor and Faculty Director of Cataloging and Metadata Services.  As a member of the Collection Management team, this position plays an integral role in maintaining the library’s catalog and provides collegial leadership, direction, vision and management of the cataloging and metadata services.  This tenure track position also includes general reference desk duties, library instruction, collection development and liaison duties with selected academic departments, participation in library policy formulation, university and professional service, and research and creative work.

Major Responsibilities:

As a Faculty Director this position provides strong, collegial leadership, direction, vision, and management of all programs, personnel, and fiduciary aspects of the cataloging department. This position is a vital communication link among the other departments and Library administration. As a member of the Library Leadership Team, responsibilities include general administrative oversight; program development and assessment; faculty evaluation and development; budget development and management as necessary; and faculty, staff, and student recruitment and hiring.

As Faculty Director of Cataloging and Metadata Services, this position reports to the Faculty Director of Collections Management, and is responsible for leading a team of University Staff and State of Colorado Classified Staff in the planning, organizing, analyzing, and evaluating activities in the Government Documents, Cataloging, and Metadata Services units.

Responsibilities include:

Management

Provide, monitor, and manage proper cataloging standards and procedures for all materials

Manage cataloging tools used; such as the OCLC Cataloging System and implement changes and enhancements

Develop, articulate, and perform projects reflecting the department’s goals

Keep abreast of current and emerging trends, issues, and methods of electronic resources management and metadata standards

Participate in planning, implementation, and management of the library’s strategic plan

Supervision

Hire, train, set goals for, mentor and evaluate cataloging staff

Service

Serve on the library’s leadership team

Serve on a variety of internal and external committees providing service to the library, university, and profession

Cataloging

Perform adaptive or original cataloging in all formats using MARC, RDA, AACR2, LCSH and LCC as needed

Perform batch-loading of large vendor record sets

Perform database maintenance practices, including using global updates to clean up data

Track, record, and disseminate department and collection statistics

Work with the library’s Web Services and Emerging Technology team to establish best practices and procedures for inoperability between the catalog and other web-based services

Collection Development/Instruction

Develop the collections in selected subject areas

Provide individual, group, or course-related instruction

Serve as department liaison and assist students and faculty in research in selected subject areas

Reference

Provide general reference services (may include nights and weekends)

Librarianship

Meet the requirements of tenure track through demonstration of a commitment to excellence in librarianship/teaching, research, professional practice, and service through continuing activity as a librarian/teacher and scholar

Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s degree from an ALA accredited library school
  • Three years recent cataloging experience
  • Experience using cataloging resources including an integrated library system, OCLC Connexion and MarcEdit
  • Supervisory experience (three years minimum)
  • Five years post MLS professional experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in batch loading of records strongly preferred
  • Experience using Innovative Interfaces Inc.’s Sierra system
  • Understanding of library data encoding standards such as MARC21, RDA, etc.
  • Understanding of technological trends and developments relevant to academic libraries
  • Experience working with and assisting library users in finding information (preferably both face-to-face and remotely) in a library setting
  • Experience in an academic library
  • Evidence of professional development activities, including research and participation in professional organizations

The Community

The Colorado Springs campus of the University of Colorado was established in 1965 and has a student population of approximately 13,000.  Doctoral degrees are offered in engineering, geropsychology, educational leadership and nursing practice. The campus also has graduate programs in business, public administration, and a variety of arts and science areas. Colorado Springs, located at the foot of Pikes Peak, has a population of approximately 500,000, with tourism, high technology, manufacturing, sports and the military ranking as the key industries within the community. Located 70 miles south of Denver, Colorado Springs offers a wide variety of leisure and educational activities including sports, parks, symphony, local theater groups, museums and several institutions of higher education.
