Job Description

The Archival Image Processing Assistant will aid the Archivist in the processing, rehousing, digitizing, preserving, and cataloging of the Clyfford Still Museum archival photographic collection. This collection features approximately 12,000 historic images of the artist, his paintings, family life, fine art photographs shot by the artist himself, as well as 8mm moving images. The position requires demonstrated ability to catalogue objects and conduct art-historical research, resolute concentration, careful handling of art objects, and attention to detail, thorough proofreading, and accuracy in data entry.    

Position: Archival Image Processing Assistant

Status: Non-exempt, 24 hours/week, one-year term with possible extension

Benefits:  Eligible for prorated, part-time employee benefits

Compensation:  $15/hour

Reports to: Archivist and Digital Collections Manager

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Assist in the processing, rehousing, digitizing, preserving, and cataloging of the Clyfford Still Museum archival photographic collection. This collection features approximately 12,000 historic images of the artist, his paintings, and his family life; fine art photographs taken by the artist himself; and 8mm moving images.
  • Scan and create digital surrogates of archival images and materials
  • Assist museum staff with access to photographic images as requested
  • Assist the Archivist in other departmental responsibilities as needed

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Preference given to candidates with a master’s degree or currently enrolled in a graduate program in Library Science, Art History, Museum Studies or related field 

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Direct experience working with archival photographs and images and knowledge of appropriate handling of objects
  • Experience with archival collections management systems or databases, and demonstrated ability to catalogue images and follow descriptive cataloguing standards
  • Thorough proofreading skills, accuracy of data entry, and attention to detail
  • Knowledge of digital file formats and related preservation standards
  • Willingness to participate in basic collections tasks
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a team
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and oral and written communication skills
  • Experience using Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word
  • Familiarity with Photoshop
  • Experience using scanners and scanning software

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in a library, archive, museum, or visual resource center
  • Experience with provenance and art historical research
  • Knowledge of emerging technology trends related to digital collections
  • Knowledge of current metadata trends and understanding of image cataloging in this context

SCHEDULE

Daytime availability during weekdays required; approximately 24 hours (specific schedule to be confirmed)

The CSMA contains studio records, photographic materials, personal effects, the artist’s tools and materials, his personal library, and extensive documentation pertaining to the art, career, and life of this important American artist.
