Job Description

Chatstaff is a chat-based virtual reference backup service, currently serving hundreds of public and academic libraries. All librarians deal with all client libraries, and are expected to be able to efficiently find information to answer questions about local services and to be able to help with online research and general reference questions. Librarians are also expected to be able to juggle chats well, regularly handling two or more simultaneously without sacrificing quality. This is a very fast-paced environment, requiring quick thinking and sharp observation in addition to strong reference and research skills.

Required qualificaitons

  • ALA-accredited master's degree
  • Experience in a reference environment
  • Experience with some online databases
  • Availability to work at least 4 hours every weekend
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Effective communication skills in a real time text only online environment (ie chat).
  • Ability to work from home without getting distracted.
  • Ability to juggle multiple simultaneous chats and searches.
  • Ability to work independently and use personal imagination and initiative to find solutions.
  • Ability to quickly learn and adapt to new technologies.
  • Stable, high-speed internet connection
  • Desk or laptop computer (not a tablet or netbook)

Preferred qualifications

  • Demonstrable chat reference experience
  • Experience with all major databases
  • Familiarity with Jing
  • Personal use of instant messaging/chat software
  • Recent experience with LibraryH3lp
