Job Description

You are invited to apply for the position of Library Director for the Ketchikan Public Library and to live in a Top 100 Small Arts Community, located in the gorgeous Inside Passage of Southeast Alaska.  The Ketchikan Public Library has been an integral part of the community for 115 years, and the person hired for this position will have an exciting opportunity to promote a well-loved institution.

About the position

The Library Director provides leadership to and oversees operations of both the Ketchikan Public Library and the University of Alaska Southeast Ketchikan Campus Library.  The Director reports directly to the City Manager and works with a nine-member Library Advisory Board to review library policies and strategic goals.  The Director supervises the office manager, the Outreach and Children’s Services paraprofessionals and two professional librarians, who in turn supervise library support staff.  The Library Director is responsible for planning and directing overall operations of the Ketchikan Public Library and UAS Ketchikan campus library, including fiscal, staff, policy and collection management.  The Library Director will also work closely with school district Librarians in maintaining the First City Libraries 9-member consortium.

About the candidate

The ideal candidate for the position of Library Director for the City of Ketchikan will have a Master of Library Science or Master of Library and Information Science degree from an accredited institution, with ten years of successful library experience, at least three of  them in library administration.  The City of Ketchikan is looking for a candidate who has demonstrated experience fostering partnerships between the library and the community, and who embraces open and meaningful communication.  The Library Director is the public face of the library, and should be actively involved in the community.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated leadership, interpersonal and supervisory skills working with a diverse population; familiarity with and a solid understanding of technology and social media; substantial experience in public services and dealing with the public; extensive experience with varied budgeting processes; will have effective written and verbal communication skills and be an effective problem solverThe candidate will have experience with strategic planning, and in developing goals and objectives and carrying projects through to completion.

The Community

Ketchikan, Alaska is a welcoming island community, with a population of approximately 13,000 people in its Borough, and about 8,000 within the City.  Ketchikan has strong ties to tourism, fishing, and the arts.  A major stop on the cruise ship itinerary, Ketchikan visitors come for sports fishing, hiking, kayaking, wildlife viewing and cultural opportunities.  Ketchikan has the world’s largest collection of totem poles, carved by artists from the three local Native Alaskan tribes.  In addition, Ketchikan has been named one of “America’s top 100 small arts communities”.  Ketchikan receives daily jet and ferry service, and is a 90-minute flight from Seattle, Washington.  The southernmost city in Alaska, Ketchikan has a moderate climate with little snow and has plentiful opportunities for outdoor recreation.

About the library

In January 2013, the community opened a new 16,250 sq. ft. library building.  The Ketchikan Public Library building received an Honorable Mention in 2014 from the IIDA (International Interior Design Association) for ‘Libraries Under 30,000 sq. ft.’  The library offers study rooms, 2 meeting rooms for library and community use, separate Teen and Children’s library spaces, a cozy fireplace, and comfortable seating with a beautiful view of Bear Valley and Deer Mountain.  In 2015, the library had over 90,000 visitors, had over 13,000 people attend 548 programs, and had a per capita circulation rate of 13.6 items.
