This is a non-benefited position not to exceed 1000 hours in a calendar year.

  • Serve as the point of contact for the department as a whole, on projects directly responsible for leading.
  • Improve service standards through procedural, systematic, and/or interpersonal means.
  • Lead certain areas of our materials' management assuring quality control and reporting those findings to the Supervisor.
  • Work more directly with other departmental liaisons on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis to develop a unique sense of this department's role within the Library.
  • Serve as a leader by being responsible for safety, security, arming, and unlocking the Hampden Center, occasionally, without a supervisor on-site.
  • Commit to continuous improvement activities that are process and goal focused.
  • Unbox, organize, catalog, and rehouse physical collections.
  • Identify material in need of repair, preservation, or assignment.
  • Manage inventory of processed materials using specific local schema.
  • Shift library materials as needed to build and comply with space planning procedures and maintenance.
  • Participate in inventory and re-labeling projects.
  • Train new staff in order to complete the goals of assigned areas.
  • Work on team building and measurement of productivity techniques.
  • Identify at least one current process within the overall operations and will head a project that will lead to sustained, measurable improvement using lean/process improvement methodologies.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to cooperate as a team member with staff to achieve efficient library operation.
  • Ability to perform closing procedures in the absence of the manager, including but not limited to, arming and/or disarming the building, handling retrieval of DU patron and community requests, as well as assessing workflow needs and prioritizing the day's activities on the Daily Notes list of projects.
  • Ability to run reports, updates, or make adjustments to records in conjunction with ongoing projects.
  • Ability to tackle lengthy projects such as shifting, data gathering, or other assorted projects that are independent in nature and require little to no supervision.
  • Excellent communication skills and a willingness to engage on a professional level to assure excellent internal customer service.
  • Ability to recognize and incorporate the mission and goals of the department, and the Library as a whole, into all aspects of work.
  • Ability to make frequent adjustments to the daily routine based on the priorities of the day.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Able to work in both a typical office environment and a warehouse environment.
  • Ability to lift boxes up to 25-50 pounds, stand, bend, kneel, push, pull, and use ladders to perform the work.

Work Schedule

20 - 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday from 8:00 am - 4:30pm.

Additional Info & Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in information or materials' processing.
  • Valid driver's license and at least 21 years of age and willing and able to operate a University vehicle and an aerial lift (after on-site training).

The Community

The Hampden Center, the 55,000 sqft, high density storage facility for the University of Denver houses nearly 90% of the University physical collections. We are entering a new, exciting phase of operations and are looking to add some interesting, library-interested staff.  As our services, partnerships, and holdings expand, we are building an operational culture that is built on a lean/continuous improvement background.  To that end, we are rarely satisfied with "good enough".  All staff are expected to participate in making the entirety of our operations more strategic, providing better outcomes to our users by building better processes, and most importantly, a willingness to experiment.  Our motto is a bad process will beat a good person everytime.

The ideal candidate will not want to sit in a cubicle with their time.  We are focused on taking the ILS out into the stacks to complete the myriad of projects we currently have underway.  In addition, this position will work 100% of their time with the collection at the offsite storage facility in Lakewood, CO (near Hampden and Kipling).
