Job Description

Position Summary:

Performs a variety of professional librarian functions on behalf of the Pierce County Library System; provides reference and community outreach services to the public; instructs customers in the use of library equipment and resources; participates in maintaining assigned collection materials; represents the Library to the community; and performs other specialized duties relative to area of assignment.

Supervisory Relationships:

Reports to a Department Director, Branch Manager, Senior Librarian; no supervisory responsibility is exercised.

Essential Functions:

  • Delivers high-quality, customer-focused services.
  • Responds to public inquiries regarding the Library’s operations, programs, services, materials, and resources.
  • Conducts reference interviews and provides readers’ advisory, research services and instruction to individuals of diverse ages and abilities.
  • Interprets and explains the Library’s policies and procedures; addresses and assists in resolving customer concerns and complaints.
  • Instructs and assists customers in the use of the Library’s equipment, catalogs, databases, public website, internet, and/or computer software applications; troubleshoots equipment issues.
  • Conducts a variety of routine library work including receiving and processing holds and/or interlibrary loan requests for customers.
  • Participates in the maintenance and development of assigned library collections; evaluates and identifies materials for repair, replacement, weeding, and/or reassignment.
  • Coordinates and assists in weeding out-dated, worn, and non-circulating items.
  • Researches and provides recommendations regarding the purchase of new library materials.
  • Serves as a representative of the Library to outside agencies, community groups, and the general public; establishes and maintains positive community relationships.
  • Attends and participates in a variety of meetings, workshops, seminars, and/or conferences; stays apprised of trends and developments in the field of public library operations, early elementary education and science (as appropriate).
  • Prepares and maintains various types of departmental records, databases, lists, and documentation.
  • Participates in updating and maintaining online content for area of assignment including website pages, blogs, and/or podcasts.
  • Demonstrates punctuality and regular and consistent attendance.
  • Brings matters of public concern regarding waste, inefficiency, corruption, discrimination, and safety to the attention of Library Management.
  • Accurately communicates the Library’s policies to members of the public in all job-related contacts.
  • Positively reflects Pierce County Library System’s mission, vision, and values to members of the public and to staff.
  • Performs other specialized duties relative to area of assignment as assigned or required.

 Additional duties specific to area of assignment include but are not limited to the following:

Reference Librarian:

  • Conducts reference interviews in person, by telephone, and electronically.
  • Utilizes various print and electronic resources to assists customers in selecting and locating library materials.
  • Creates and maintains reference and reading lists, files, databases, and selected web links.
  • Develops, coordinates, promotes, delivers, and evaluates instructional programs and/or presentations provided to customers and staff; prepares and maintains program materials.

Community Outreach Librarian:

  • Prepares and provides community outreach services in community, schools and other sites.
  • Selects, packs, and delivers library materials to outreach customers.
  • Prepares and maintains readers’ advisory materials.

  • Representing the Library to community organizations, outside agencies, and the public.
  • Conducting specialized duties relative to area of assignment. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science required; and
  • At least one year professional librarian experience preferred.  

Licenses, Certifications, and Special Requirements:

  • State of Washington Librarian Certification is required.
  • Depending on area of assignment, a valid Washington State Driver’s License may be required.
  • Must pass local police and Washington State Adult/Child Abuse records check prior to hire.
  • The ability to work evenings and weekends on a rotating schedule and to adapt to schedule changes on short notice is required.

Working Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Work is performed in a variety of outreach environments and involves regular contact with the public.
  • Assignments may involve working on bookmobiles and in care facilities with exposure to variable weather conditions, general driving hazards, vehicle fumes, infectious diseases, and potentially volatile patrons.
  • Subject to driving, climbing in and out of vehicles, sitting for extended periods of time, standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to lift and carry library materials and lift/pull loaded carts.

Pierce County Library System serves all of unincorporated Pierce County and the annexed cities and towns of Bonney Lake, Buckley,  DuPont, Eatonville, Edgewood, Fife, Gig Harbor, Lakewood, Milton, Orting, South Prairie, Steilacoom, Sumner, University Place, and Wilkeson.
