Job Description

CU Boulder Libraries is now accepting applications for a Digital Imaging Technologist. The Digital Imaging Technologist oversees operations of CU Boulder Libraries Digitization Lab by maintaining existing and developing new workflows for digitizing library collections. This requires analyzing characteristics of the collections and selecting appropriate digitization techniques and workflows. Along with digitization, this role maintains the lab and equipment and provides supervision to student assistants. The Digital Imaging Technologist must be someone who is comfortable speaking with others as they will provide training, outreach, and communicate with stakeholders.

The person in this role will need a specialized educational background in media production to provide technical expertise in all areas of the digital imaging production process for various static media including capture, processing, editing, quality control, delivery, and production management. In addition, they must maintain a current knowledge base in the field of media production and imaging science to execute the job duties effectively

What your key responsibilities will be:

Digitize Library Collection:

  • Maintain existing and develop new scanning and photography workflows based on best practices to optimize digitization procedures and increase the lab's productivity.
  • Maintain existing and develop new digitization lab procedures and production management protocols.
  • Manage quality assurance on all digitized files created by student assistants and recommends steps for remediation.
  • Digitize materials that require professional expertise or special handling beyond the student assistants' abilities.
  • Automate lab processes where appropriate to ensure efficient digital file creation and processing.

Maintain Digitization Lab and Equipment:

  • Schedule usage of and provide access to the digitization lab.
  • Provide basic troubleshooting for equipment and software.
  • Coordinate with appropriate individuals to schedule repairs and maintenance work.
  • Make recommendations to the Head of Digital Asset Management & Preservation Services on equipment and software purchases.
  • Update existing procedures and devise new procedures to improve the lab's efficiency, increase output, and digitize a broader spectrum of materials.

Supervise Student Assistants:

  • Assign projects and daily tasks to student digitization technicians.
  • Review students' work on a regular basis and provide feedback to ensure high-quality, consistent production of digitized materials.
  • Facilitate students' work by solving problems that arise from equipment, software, or special materials.
  • Manage personnel budget and schedules students to maximize productivity within budgetary constraints.

Provide Training and Outreach:

  • Train student digitization technicians at point-of-hire and on an on-going basis.
  • Create and maintain training materials.
  • Provide a digitization lab orientation and basic training for individuals using the digitization lab for the first time.
  • Offer technical support and training at point-of-need for individuals who are using the digitization lab.
  • Meet with stakeholders of digitization projects to understand their needs, make recommendations based on current best practices and available technologies, and advise on media production management to ensure that benchmarks are met from project conception through completion.

Qualifications 

What we require:

  • Bachelor's degree in media production, photography, information management, or fine or applied arts from an accredited college or university. 
  • Two years of experience using machines and processes involved in digitization.

What we’d like you to have:

  • One year experience with supervision. 
  • One year experience digitizing materials in an academic library or cultural heritage setting.
  • Working knowledge of current media production software and procedures involved in archival digitization processes.  

Preferred qualifications may be used to further reduce the pool of applicants to those who are most highly qualified.

The University of Colorado Digital Library, a collaborative project between the University of Colorado System and institutions of the Auraria Higher Education Campus, provides centralized access to locally created digital collections as well as additional resources for teaching, learning, and research. Collections include images, audio, and video files. Many of these resources are available to the general public. The digitization lab is a facility for UCB University Libraries faculty and staff engaged in library-sponsored digital projects.
