Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY: Seeking an energetic, enthusiastic and service-oriented professional to join the Adult Services staff at East Library. You will work closely with our patrons, answer questions, assist with searches, promote library services and provide reference services at the Reference and East Teen Center public service desks. Additionally, you will work closely Adult Service trainers and coordinate the adult public computer classes. This exempt, full-time position will work as part of a collaborative team committed to achieving the mission of the Pikes Peak Library District: to seek, engage and transform lives through library services and resources that enrich individual lives and build community.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works approximately 18 hours per week at the Reference, East Teen Center, and Computer Commons public service desks assisting patrons in person and over the telephone. Provides reference services, assists in research, and performs in-depth searches and bibliographic identification.
  • Maintains confidentiality in all interactions with patrons.
  • Staffs PPLD’s “Ask-A-Librarian” Email reference and PPLD’s IM Reference Service.
  • Works closely with PPLD’s Adult Services public trainers, coordinates the adult public computer classes. Is responsible for announcing the quarterly district trainer meetings, setting the agendas and facilitating the meetings. Oversees the class curricula revisions. Implements new classes based on patron demand. Organizes training for the trainers as needed. Teaches 2-3 public computer classes per month. Recruits volunteers to assist with the computer classes.
  • Maintains the online Adult Services Training Manual including staff training reference exercises and questions.
  • Teaches staff “Finding Info @ Our Library” classes for our State & Community Recommended Website, Databases A-Z, and JobSearch.
  • Represents the library through instructional tours, demonstrations, talks and by participating in community groups and forming external contacts.
  • Presents a positive, professional image of PPLD in all interpersonal communications and
  • Participates in committees or teams as requested.
  • Acts as “Person in Charge” on evenings and weekends in the absence of the Adult Services
  • Is comfortable with computers, eReaders, devices and online resources.

Performs other job-related duties and projects as assigned.

Additional Info & Requirements

POSITION HOURS:  40 hours per week:

                                   Mon, Tues, Thurs, Friday    9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.            

                                    Wednesday                            12:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

                                    Every 3rd Saturday

                                    9 Sundays per year

Note: Schedule will include weekends, every 3rd Saturday and in Sunday rotation; approximately 9 Sundays per year. Regular schedule may be subject to minor changes due to required meetings, training events, etc. Also, management may require modifications to a position’s schedule, days, times and locations at any time as the needs of the Library District change.

  • Prefer a candidate with a minimum of one year of professional reference experience working in a busy public library environment. SIRSI experience is a plus!
  • Advanced-level proficiency in using MS Office software is required.
  • Ability to communicate well verbally and in writing with patrons and staff, and to maintain effective working relationships, both within and outside the organization.      
  • Interpersonal communication skills necessary to understand, interpret and paraphrase questions.
  • Ability to represent the library with tact and courtesy and to exhibit sound professional judgment and demeanor in all public interactions.
  • Ability to foster teamwork, demonstrating a willingness to assist and support coworkers, to encourage others to contribute ideas, and to maintain flexibility.
  • Ability to establish rapport with firms, organizations, and the business faculty of area educational institutions to assess local business information needs.
  • Excellent communication skills, the ability to work in a team environment, a “whatever it takes” work ethic, and an excellent customer service attitude. Bilingual ability is a plus in serving our diverse community.
