Job Description

SUMMARY

This Colorado State Library position provides leadership and technical assistance to staff at state-operated institutions for youth, ensuring their facility libraries provide the services, materials, and programs needed to support education and treatment. The position is also responsible for coordinating acquisitions and monitoring the materials budgets for the Institutional Library Development team.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Consult for the Institutional Library Development program as described in state statute (CRS 24-90-105 (1)(d) and (2) (a.3).
  2. Collaborate with leaders and staff of Colorado Department of Education (CDE), Colorado State Library (CSL), Colorado Department of Human Services (DHS), Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind (CSDB), Colorado Library Consortium, Colorado school districts and community libraries, and other state and national library and correctional organizations to ensure institutional libraries that support their agency missions to educate, treat, prepare youth for college and career, and engage youth in their communities.
  3. Coordinate acquisition activities and monitor the budgets for the institutional library development team.
  4. Develop, promote, and apply library policy, standards, best practices, and assessment measures that support the Highly Effective School Library Program, Colorado Academic Standards, and student achievement.
  5. Assess youth institutional libraries; report on effectiveness of programs, collections, and services; and provide resources that support and encourage continuous improvement.
  6. Advocate for library positions in the youth institutions that meet minimum standard requirements of the profession. Coordinate, design, and conduct professional development to address staff training needs.
  7. Develop and continuously monitor library collections in multiple youth institutions.
  8. Seek out and engage in continuing education and professional development applicable to libraries and librarianship in facilities that serve detained and committed youth.

Additional Info & Requirements

Minimum experience:

  1. Three years professional library experience, including at least two years’ experience serving young adults in a school, public, or institutional library.
  2. Evidence of broad knowledge of library principles and practices: selecting, acquiring, classifying, and cataloging materials; collection development and management; program development, reference service; reader’s advisory service; planning, evaluating, and reporting on library services; internet and online database searching.
  3. Experience developing and conducting effective training for library staff.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities needed to perform the job:

  1. Familiarity with young adult literature and experience in selection of library materials for young adults.
  2. Ability to collaborate as a member of a team and frequently to serve as project leader without supervisory authority over team members.
  3. Organized, flexible, high tolerance for ambiguity, and able to juggle multiple demands.
  4. Advocate for libraries within non-library agencies.
  5. Highly persuasive written and oral communication skills.
  6. Ability to justify and manage multiple budgets, keeping detailed, accurate records.
  7. Strong computer skills using Windows and Microsoft Office products and high comfort level identifying and implementing technology and software to meet changing needs of clients.
  8. Able and willing to travel extensively in Colorado.
