Job Description:

The serials technician processes serials, facilitates accessibility of serials in all formats, edits and updates the online catalog, and copies catalog library materials. Assists in training, troubleshooting and maintenance of the library's ILS (Integrated Library System) software, and assists the university archivist.

Duties:  

• Manages daily operations including establishing work priorities for self and students assigned to area.  

• Facilitates all processing aspects of print and electronic serials control including copy cataloging, check-in, holdings and link maintenance, accessing problems, title changes, cessation and claims, and duplicate exchanges.  

• Oversees retention, binding withdrawal of serials, and standing orders.  

• Edits serials department procedures manual.

• Collects and reports statistics.  

• Triages incoming ILS problems. Resolves or routes problems to the appropriate person or organization. Tracks problems and follows them through to resolution.

• Attends selected vendor ILS meetings and delivers meeting reports to appropriate library staff.  

• Creates lists, reports, and statistics as requested by librarians.

• Tracks items owned, orders made, bills paid, periodicals received and patrons who borrowed items.

• Maintains familiarity with MARC records.

• Routinely catalogs electronic monographs, obtaining records from vendors and/or OCLC and loads them into the local ILS.  

• In the absence of the Technician I’s backup or for special projects, copies catalogs and/or processes materials in various formats.

• Searches OCLC, then downloads and edits records to conform to national and local standards (CONSER, AACRII, REDA, OCLC, and ILS vendor), policies and procedures.  

• In the supervisor's absence, checks the Technician I's copy cataloging.  

• Collects and reports statistics.

• Serves as backup for government documents record loads.  

• Assists university archivist with various tasks including processing collections, creating guides and indexes, digitizing materials, assisting with exhibits, assisting patrons with material requests, and special projects.

• Occasionally opens department to public and assists patrons in absence of archivist or student help.  

• In cooperation with other technical services staff, supervises technical services student employees including interviewing, hiring, training, scheduling, assigning tasks, tracking performance and terminating when necessary.  

• Other related duties as assigned.

Salary note: Although the full salary range for this position is provided, appointments are typically made at or near the range minimum.

FLSA status: Non-Exempt; position is eligible for overtime compensation.

Minimum Qualifications:  Two years of general library experience including preparing, shelving, and maintaining library materials. Familiarity with MARC records, serials control and cataloging procedures.

Substitutions: Two years of course work from an accredited college or university including 12 semester hours of library science course work may substitute for the two years of the general library experience. If substituting education for experience, you must provide transcripts with your application.
