Job Description

 The Library Services Specialist is expert in highly effective school library programs, and leads the development and implementation of library services that positively impact students, families and teachers. The Specialist is responsible for developing and delivering high-quality instructional resources and assessments, and enhancing instructional practices that embed 21st century inquiry, tools and resources, especially those provided by library services. The Specialist accomplishes and leads this work through meaningful collaboration with Teacher Librarians, Library staff, administrators, district departments and community organizations.

1.  Work collaboratively with members of Library Services, Educational Technology, Curriculum and Instruction, ARE and other district departments to support teacher librarians, library paras, school staff, and classroom teachers in the planning, facilitating, and delivery of personalized professional learning opportunities that:

  • integrate digital and information literacy (related to ISTE and AASL standards) into Common Core and Colorado Academic Standard aligned instruction;
  • increase the use of high quality digital content and tools, including the ILS
  • increase reading motivation and reading achievement
  • increase library staff competencies related to highly effective school libraries in the CDE rubric.

Lead the development of resources to address those needs and increase the quality of instruction and the use of instructional technologies related to digital literacy instruction and library services. Model effective teaching and planning techniques when presenting to groups and other professionals.

3.  Develop research-based recommendations for instructional strategies, professional development, and assessments to increase the quality of teaching and learning.

3.  Build relationships with various internal departments to drive collaboration and project success; interact with and respond effectively to urgent requests from multiple internal and external Denver Public Schools stakeholders.

4.  Collaborate with building administrators and library staff to develop, implement and evaluate library programs and services. Provide coaching support to teacher-librarians, library paras, teachers and administrators to improve management of the library space, resources and instruction through onsite visits, face to face and online trainings and coaching. Engage teacher librarians in delivering effective instructional practice through classroom observation, data analysis, and examination of student work. Provide clear and direct feedback to teachers based on analysis of practice.

5.  Under direction of Library Services Director, work collaboratively with the Denver Public Library and other community organizations in order to increase access to library services for all students, teachers and families.

6.  Collaborate with other department staff in the management, development, and analysis of SLOs and other district-supported assessments. Provide support and training for administration, reporting and data use of standards aligned and formative assessments. Deeply analyze student achievement data (student work samples, assessments and performance-based assessments) to determine how to better develop materials and provide targeted, high quality teacher supports.

7.  Develop and manage strategies for recruiting and retaining building library staff.

8.  Develops strategies and clear and specific performance measures for individual projects that are easily translated into individual work goals and deliverables for other team members. Create timelines for initiatives; assess and tracks project progress regularly using various computer programs and tools; drive project completion by holding others accountable for responsibilities and deadlines. Seek and integrate performance related feedback into future approaches and strategies.

9.  As needed, coordinate and advise on collection management, library inventory, and resource purchases which include both print and digital content.

10. Participate in regional and state-level library and technology associations in order to acquire and share knowledge of best practices within the district.

11. Perform other duties as assigned.

-Ability to collaborate with teachers and administrators in order to accomplish specific goals.

-Clear vision for role of library services and digital literacy in K-12 education.

-Knowledge of effective instructional programs and methodologies and experience in providing such instruction to meet ISTE, AASL, Common Core and Colorado Academic Standards.

-Facilitate, design, and plan, adult professional learning.

-Experience in the design of standards-based curriculum and assessments.

-Ability to work effectively in team situations.

-Advanced oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.

-Ability and willingness to set priorities, organize workload, handle multiple responsibilities and meet deadlines independently in an environment that requires a high degree of flexibility.

-High degree of approachability, accessibility, responsibility and follow-through on projects.

-Ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies, Superintendent policies, building and department procedures.

-Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with people from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds. Willingness to contribute to cultural diversity for educational enrichment.
