Job Description

It is the mission of the Pikes Peak Library District to seek, engage, and transform through library services and resources that enrich individuals and build community. This position operates in a diverse environment to help fulfill the mission of the Library by performing high level cataloging tasks to maintain PPLD’s online catalog and to facilitate staff and patron access to all library materials. Cataloging tasks may include: cataloging from copy, cataloging foreign language materials, original MARC/RDA record cataloging, and assigning Dewey Decimal Classification numbers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Performs copy and original cataloging in a variety of formats, including foreign language materials
  2. Verifies bibliographic information using an authority file
  3. Tests and documents errors with catalog software: assists with documenting catalog procedures
  4. Resolves problems for library staff regarding bibliographic and item information
  5. Assists with training new copy catalog staff and reviews work of others
  6. Cataloger In charge when Senior cataloger is unavailable
  7. Verifies and assigns Dewey classification numbers
  8. Creates simple bibliographic records for items that are being ordered
  9. Maintains catalog by editing, deleting, and merging bibliographic records. Applies independent judgment in reviewing records and refers problems to the Senior Cataloger
  10. Searches on-line databases for bibliographic records; verifies and edits the existing bibliographic data to match the item in hand
  11. Interacts with vendors to set up appropriate profiles
  12. Loads bib records from vendors via FTP other internet sites
  13. Creates item records and processes items for distribution
  14. Performs other duties as assigned

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:

  1. Working knowledge of basic reference and bibliographic searching tools (OCLC).
  2. Knowledge of MARC, RDA, and Dewey Decimal Classification systems.
  3. Ability to work independently without close supervision
  4. Requires the ability to type 40 wpm
  5. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  6. Good knowledge of library policies and practices.

REQUIRED PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

  1. Ability to stretch, reach, and lift up to 15 pounds on a repetitive basis.
  2. Ability to sit or stand and perform accurate and repetitive data entry for extended periods.
  3. Ability to frequently stoop, bend, twist, squat, and reach.
  4. Ability to lift boxes weighing up to 25 lbs. from the floor to waist high and ability to shift boxes weighing up to 50 lbs. laterally are required.
  5. Ability to move wheeled book carts weighing up to 120 lbs. (when loaded with books).
  1. Requires an MLS or MLIS degree.
  2. Requires a minimum of 2 years of cataloging-related experience.
  3. Requires the ability to perform the job’s physical requirements as explained in “Required Physical Abilities” above. The selected candidate will be required to successfully pass a physical capacity test that will evaluate the candidate’s ability to meet the job’s required physical abilities. PPLD will arrange, fund, and conduct this test at an outsourced location.
  4. Requires excellent communication skills, ability to work in a team environment, a “whatever it takes” work ethic, and an excellent customer service attitude. Bilingual ability is a plus in serving our diverse community.
