Job Description
Seeking a collaborative, energetic and creative professional to oversee the Children’s Services Department and Family Place area for Library 21c.
This is an exciting opportunity to run a community center for early childhood information, parent education, socialization, emergent literacy, and family support, making the library a “destination” for families with young children in our community. This position operates in a diverse environment to help fulfill PPLD’s mission by providing children’s reference and readers’ advisory services, and children’s programming. This position uses comprehensive knowledge of library science, the PPLD children’s collection, electronic databases, current technologies, and community resources.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervises daily operations of Library 21c Children’s Services, including: developing weekly desk schedules, coordinating substitute employees, approving timesheets, doing staff performance evaluations, and interviewing and selecting new Children’s Services staff. Serves as Librarian in Charge of the building on a rotating basis with other librarians
- Trains Children’s Services staff including new staff, substitutes and storytellers at central locations and community libraries throughout the District
- Works on the public service desks providing reference service to walk-ins, over the phone, and via electronic delivery, references services includes reference and reader’s advisory services with age-appropriate materials and online searches for children, caregivers and educators.
- Creates, promotes, and presents children’s programming (focuses on developmental needs, interests, and promoting children’s literacy to parents and other adults and caregivers)
- Promotes library services and materials through age-appropriate tours, publicity, displays and merchandising; collaborates with schools and provides outreach
- Develops reading lists, pathfinders, booktalks or other creative means to make the children’s collection more accessible
- Coordinates a major function in the preparation of Summer Reading Program (such as web page development, prize management, or sponsor liaison) or the PPLD Kids webpage.
- Coordinates the district-wide tween committee, kits and programming. The Family Place Library and the Sensory Storytime program are also coordinated from this location
- Performs other job-related duties and projects as assigned
Additional Info & Requirements
POSITION HOURS: 40 hours per week:
Monday – Friday 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Every 3rd Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. (with a day off during the week)
Every 6th Sunday 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. (with 4 hours off during the week)
- Minimum two years of library experience, prefer candidates that have one year of supervisory experience, prefer candidates that have experience working with children in a library setting. SIRSI experience is a plus!
- Advanced knowledge of library services, best practices and procedures
- Ability to cultivate a team environment that encourages personnel to work across departments
- Excellent communication skills, demonstrates a “whatever-it-takes” work ethic, and models an excellent customer service attitude.
- Bilingual ability is a plus in serving our diverse community
