Job Description

The Digital Services Librarian works under the supervision of the Library Director among a dedicated team of library staff and volunteers. 

  • Assist in the coordination of digital resources and services
  • Assist in the planning, creation of guidelines, selection, implementation and organization of digital projects and other projects
  • Support the capture and conversion of digital objects in a variety of formats, such as the digitization of photographs, audio files, video files, printed material
  • Networking and outreach to grow awareness of AACL
  • Provides reference assistance to library patrons via email, phone, and/or in person

Other Functions:

  • Assist Library Director in other library tasks, such as intern & volunteer management, donor relations, grant writing, collection development, and reference services among other duties

The AAC seeks candidates with drive and ambition who are interested in supporting the mission and vision of the American Alpine Club. 

 Required Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in library/information science from an ALA-accredited institution (may consider experience as substitution)
  • Experience with digital asset management systems
  • Experience with MARC and non-MARC metadata standards (e.g., Dublin Core, EAD). 
  • Coursework and/or experience in archives processing and description
  • Ability to create content-rich digital collections based on specific subject areas
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong interest in and enthusiasm for climbing and/or outdoor recreation.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years relevant experience
  • Background or understanding of taxonomies and schemas
  • Experience with HTML/CSS and website design
  • Experience with Omeka
  • Knowledge of current issues in digital preservation, metadata, and data curation
  • Basic knowledge of copyright and rights management in relation to digital information
  • Ability to strategically acquire content within budgetary constraints
  • Review digital resource licenses and donor agreements to ensure their compliance with established standards, requirements, best practices, and copyright guidelines
  • Experience in establishing partnerships with other institutions and digital media providers

The American Alpine Club Library houses one of the world’s finest collections of mountain-related artifacts, archives, rare books, maps and media. With a very small library staff, it is necessary that we tackle a wide variety of tasks.
