Job Description
Provides high quality friendly service to customers and staff overseeing the Central Library circulation service department. Coordinates system-wide circulation services and policies. Supervises staff and develops/conducts staff training. This position works at the Central Library and may travel and temporarily work at other locations to conduct training/process analysis.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides friendly, efficient and professional service to customers in-person, by telephone and email
- Assists with higher level administrative duties as needed such as statistical analysis, system reviews, process assessments, market analysis, etc.
- Assists in the development of policies and procedures
- May work on joint regional library service committees and user groups representing the Aurora Public Library
- Oversees coordination of volunteers in Circulation
- Performs additional duties as assigned
Supervisory/Staff Support Focus (Primary):
- Supervises Circulation Department staff at the Central Library.
- Develops and/or oversees staff scheduling
- Acts as "Person-In-Charge" on a rotating basis with added authority to manage customers issues and other situations when supervisory staff are not on site or unavailable
- Develops, conducts and oversees staff training
Circulation Focus (primary):
Oversees and/or conducts the following:
- Checks books/other items in and out through computerized system
- Answers general customer questions regarding library policy, procedures and customer accounts
- Conducts in-depth customer account research and problem solving
- Handles complex and difficult customer situations professionally and tactfully
- Makes customer account and circulation decisions using good judgment that balances customer satisfaction and policy intent
- Answers basic reference, reader's advisory and general customer questions
- Redirects more advanced reference questions to Reference staff as appropriate
- Operates a cash register, conducts customer payment transactions, maintains a cash drawer
- Collaborates with Administrative Services staff on cash management policies and procedures
- May conduct data entry into library system, spreadsheet and other databases
- Sorts, processes, shelves and assists with other general library materials inventory management duties
- Organizes/straightens chairs, desks, computers and light dusting, indoor trash pick-up consisting mainly of papers, candy wrappers, etc.
- Oversees and manages the library couriers
- Responsible for scheduling periodic maintenance for the library courier van
- Additional duties as assigned

Working Conditions
Physical Demands: Light to moderate physical work requiring ability to lift 30 pounds with or without assistance; frequent lifting, carrying, walking and standing; may require frequent pulling, pushing, bending and stooping; speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens; vision to read and interpret reports and other written documents; hand/eye coordination for operation of computer keyboard, carts and moveable shelving.
Work Environment: Works primarily indoors but may work outdoors assisting with a program or outreach events in varying weather conditions.
Equipment Used: Standard business equipment including a PC and common office software such as email, internet, Word, Excel and menu driven databases as part of the Library automated systems.
At least 3 years supervisory experience in a library, retail or customer service orientated function.
Knowledge of the principles, organization, and practices of library service; a background in specialized children's and youth resource materials; library classification system; a computer system and related software; Internet computerized systems and their applications to assigned functions; basic trouble-shooting in computer operation.
Ability to deal with stressful situations with tact and diplomacy; communicate with diverse customers/staff of all ages in a professional, age and culturally, appropriate manner; use general office equipment, computers, calculators, and copy/fax machine; perform basic mathematical calculations; follow oral and written instructions; work shifts, including some nights, and weekends. Ability to speak Spanish a plus.

Colorado driver's license with good driving history. This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
