Job Description

Position Summary
Provide quality and evidence-based information services and user education to meet the information needs of medical staff, residents, associates, students, patients, and the community. Manages all library operations including the selection and purchasing of electronic and print resources, filling article requests and performing online literature searches for physicians and associates.

Minimum Education Requirements
Master's degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association

Minimum Experience Requirements
One to three years of experience in a health sciences library Experience synthesizing and interpreting evidence based research Online searching experience with a variety of medically focused search engines as well as the Internet. Evidence of teaching skills. Web page development experience. Problem solving, analytical skills, creativity, and ability to work independently required. Effective oral and written communication, presentation, interpersonal, and negotiation skills required.


License/Certifications
Membership in the Academy of Health Information Professionals of the Medical Library Association preferred.

Position Duties (essential functions denoted with an * )

  • Coordinate strategic planning for library operations with Medical and Nursing Education and Medical Staff Services leadership.*
  • Participate in Medical Staff committees/activities as required (i.e. department peer review committees, Graduate Education Committee, etc.).*
  • Negotiate license agreements with vendors of publications and databases.*
  • Evaluate new information technologies and assess their application to library management and services.*
  • Actively participate in Centura Health Internet and intranet initiatives.*
  • Assure compliance with accrediting and regulatory agencies relating to knowledge based activities.*
  • Actively markets and promotes Medical Library to new and current Centura staff and employees.*
  • Establish library policies and procedures.*
  • Keep accurate statistics on all aspects of library operations.*
  • Participate in appropriate cooperative arrangements with other libraries.*
  • Participate in interdisciplinary, interdepartmental performance improvement activities.*
  • Supervise volunteers and students.*
  • Provide training and educational opportunities for medical staff, residents, associates, students, patients, patient families and the community.*
  • Train users in searching and evaluating information resources on Internet and Evidence-Based Information resources.*
  • Respond in a timely manner to all information requests.*
  • Develop, perform and document complex literature searches for project teams.*
  • Use electronic and print sources to assist library customers in obtaining information appropriate to their needs.*
  • Conduct literature searches within appropriate timeframe.*
  • Process all loan requests within 24 hours of receipt.*
  • Assist and provide support for librarians in other Centura Health facilities as needed.*
  • Maintain awareness of developments in the information field by participation in professional organizations, conferences, continuing education classes and networking.*
  • Perform ongoing assessment of the information needs of the organization.*
  • Select and evaluate information resources in any format for incorporation into the physical or virtual library collection.*
  • Budget for library operations and capital expenditures.*
  • Responsible for cataloging and processing of new materials.*
  • Manage and maintain the entire library’s print and computerized systems.*
  • Manage the collection of the institution.*
  • Participate and assist in the selection of Centura Health electronic medical information resources.*

This position is non-exempt, part time and approximately 32 hours weekly.
