Job Description

Plan, develop, implement and evaluate the library’s program of information and adult services. Supervise public reference desk services including in-person and phone inquiries, reader’s advisory, the public Internet service, and instruction in the use of the library and its resources. Provide reference services using both print and electronic sources and serve at the reference desk providing direct service to patrons. Administer the library’s participation in the state-wide “Ask Colorado” on-line reference service. Plan, organize and promote the library’s Federal Depository Library Program service. Supervise Inter-Library Loan services. Evaluate, develop and maintain the adult non-fiction, fiction, media, periodicals, and reference collections, and electronic resources. Review, select and order adult materials within budget allocations. Direct the development of cultural and educational programs for general and adult audiences. Plan and implement marketing strategies for departmental services and collection; oversee the preparation of book lists, bibliographies, and book displays. Administer the Court-appointed Community Service program. Manage operations to achieve goals within available resources and in accordance with priorities set by the Library Strategic Plan. Plan and organize workloads and staff assignments; train, motivate and evaluate assigned staff; review progress, enhance employee development and direct change as needed. Maintain harmony among employees and resolve grievances and complaints. Review applications and participate in the interview process when appropriate. Recruit, train and supervise volunteers. Assure that assigned areas of responsibility are performed within budget; perform cost control activities; monitor revenues and expenditures to assure sound fiscal control; prepare annual budget requests; assure effective and efficient use of budgeted funds, personnel, materials, facilities, and time. Analyze technological advances and recommend appropriate applications. Oversee researching the availability of grant monies and preparation of grant applications. Plan and coordinate with other professional staff the management and development of the library’s collection of books, media, electronic resources, and other items. This includes selection, de-selection, marketing, evaluation, reconsideration, cataloging, inventory and acquisitions. Review and keep abreast of major selection tools; participate in on-going development of collection philosophy and policies. Assume responsibility for specific areas of the collection as assigned. Conduct tours and present information to community organizations and groups. Prepare written reports and compile statistics in support of the reference and adult services area. Participate on the library’s management team to develop short and long-range plans, policies and procedures, and problem-solving for the library as a whole. Communicate with other members about management issues and priorities. Recommend policies and administrative action to team. Attend meetings and communicate decisions with staff, as appropriate. Represent the library on city and county committees, with community groups, and in regional and state professional organizations. Plan and coordinate the operations and policies of the shared ILS system with other Flatirons Library Consortia members. Read professional publications and attend professional meetings to keep informed of new publications and library materials, services, and current events, which affect assigned program area. Perform other duties as assigned.
