Job Description

The City of Loveland is seeking a highly innovative, strategic and forward thinking individual to serve as Director of the Loveland Public Library. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership skills, exhibit a clear vision and commitment to librarianship, articulate and advocate the Library’s mission to the public, provide sound fiscal management and promote collaborative relationships within the library and throughout the community.

The library’s success stems from strong community partnerships with local boards and businesses, tech companies, non-profits, and schools.  A number of the library’s progressive initiatives have been supported through the long and rewarding partnership with the Friends of the Library Foundation and its 500 plus members who provide support and advocacy for the library.  Future opportunities and challenges include expanding these community partnerships, initiating a new strategic plan, advocating for library capital expansion, furthering Latino community outreach, investigating enhanced funding opportunities, and acting as a support coach and mentor to the library team.

The mission of the Loveland Public Library is to inform, to enrich, and to inspire; thereby engaging and strengthening the community. The future Director will support this mission through a deep understanding of issues relevant to librarianship and a demonstrated commitment to public service.

The salary range for this position is $85,800 - $137,200 per year with an expected hiring range of $85,800 - $111,500 per year, depending on qualifications and experience.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Ensure clarity, commitment and performance standards in order to deliver the Library's stated mission to the community.
  • Create and maintain a library strategic plan. Develop & drive both short-term & long-term goals.
  • Apply strategic thinking to analyze existing programs, services and resources to achieve future objectives.
  • Advocate for and networks within the community to represent the library's services, goals and mission.
  • Participate in formulating and administering both City and Library policies.
  •  Emphasize commitment to customer service, teamwork and communications.
  • Oversee & manage the library's annual budget.
  • Evaluate results of overall operations and service levels and provide regular reports to the City Manager's Office and City Council as needed. 
  • Provide leadership, guidance and direction to staff to effectively meet present, future, and community needs.
  • Provide assistance and guidance in conflict negotiation & problem-solving scenarios.
  • Drive an innovative culture of excellence.
  • Serve with other City department directors as a member of Management Team.
  • Act as staff liaison to the Library Board on policy matters and place policy changes into effect.
  • Supports the Friends of the Library Foundation in developing and implementing various fundraisers and capitol campaigns.
  • Provides regular communication with the Boards and responds to member requests.
  • Lead by example and motivate staff to achieve their full potential. Ensures free and open communication at all levels of the library organization.
  • Maintain current in all aspects of librarianship.
  • Provide general direction and regular reviews for staff under direct supervision.

Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees: planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
 
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
Provide leadership in collection development, correspondence, public relations, community outreach and networking.
 
SUPERVISORY DUTIES:
This position is a second-line supervisor responsible for supervision of first-line supervisors and may also supervise non-exempt and/or non-supervisory exempt employee(s). 
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

Knowledge of practices and principles of organizational management. Strong leadership qualities with the ability to inspire, motivate and lead staff and volunteers in a highly professional manner. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to build strong working relationships with all levels of staff and the community. Ability to develop long and short-term strategies to meet the goals of the City and City Council. Knowledge of innovative new ways to serve the community. Ability to work effectively in a team. Ability to work independently with minimal direction. Ability to demonstrate a high degree of ethics, integrity and discretion. Ability to facilitate and navigate conflict & make difficult decisions. Must possess strong financial acumen, knowledge of change/change process and community outreach.

Work is generally performed in an office environment in a dynamic library that may require sitting for extended periods of time, with some standing, kneeling, bending, reaching and stooping and the ability to travel to various facilities.  Light physical effort required by handling objects up to 20 pounds occasionally.  Flexible schedule requires some evening & weekend hours. Material and equipment directly used:

Located on the edge of a revitalizing downtown, the Loveland Public Library exists as a community space and welcoming environment for patrons of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. With a budget of $3.7 million and a beautiful space of 60,000 sq. ft., staffing includes 41 full and part time benefitted employees (32.5 FTE.) Library staff are especially proud of their innovative programming including makerspaces, cultural events, local author showcases, computer classes, youth advisory commission, STEM programs, Kids Café, and nature lectures.
