Job Description
It is the mission of the Pikes Peak Library District to seek, engage and transform lives through library services and resources that enrich individual lives and build community. This position operates in a diverse environment to help fulfill PPLD’s mission by providing children’s programming, children’s reference and readers’ advisory services. This position uses comprehensive knowledge of library science, the PPLD children’s collection, electronic databases, current technologies, and community resources.
Essential Functions:
- Provides expertise regarding children’s developmental stages, interests, community needs and children’s literature
- Works on the public service desks providing reference service to walk-ins, over the phone, and via electronic delivery; reference service includes reference and reader’s advisory services with age-appropriate materials and online searches for children, caregivers, and educators
- Creates, promotes, and presents children’s programming (focuses on developmental needs, interests and promoting children’s literacy to parents and other adults or caregivers); with additional focus on tween programming
- Promotes library services and materials through age-appropriate tours, publicity, displays and merchandising
- Develops reading lists, pathfinders, booktalks or other creative means to make the children’s collection more accessible
- Collaborates with schools or community groups and provides outreach to communicate services and programs; will schedule in-house school art shows and receptions in EA Childrens.
- Helps coordinate a major function of KidsWeb on ppld.org
- May assist in training of all new Children’s staff (including substitute staff) at central locations and community libraries
- Suggests Children’s collection materials based on PPLD’s collection guidelines and policies; will oversee magazine collection at EA Children’s.
- Examines Children’s collection for replacement and/or removal of materials with focus on series J-Fiction
- Reads and evaluates challenged materials as requested
- May coordinate and implement initiatives (i.e., early literacy, family literacy, school-age and/or tween programming, etc.) in Children’s services
- May manage Children’s collections materials (i.e., series J-Fiction, literacy kits, reference)
- May participate on various PPLD Teams or advisory boards as requested
- May organize and conduct projects related to departmental goals and needs
- Performs other job-related duties and projects as assigned
Additional Info & Requirements
POSITION HOURS: 20 hours per week per the following rotating schedule:
Monday 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Tuesday 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Wednesday 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Thursday 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Friday 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. (shift one hour earlier for monthly meeting)
Note: Schedule will also include working on Sunday approximately every 6 weeks. Regular schedule may be subject to minor changes due to required meetings, training events, etc. Also, management may require modifications to a position’s schedule, days, times and locations at any time as the needs of the Library District change.
