Job Summary: The Director of the Library and Archives is a full-time, staff position which holds faculty status for governance and service. The Director supervises professional, paraprofessional and support staff members, along with several student workers, in a small, specialized library environment that includes a main site at the Arapahoe campus and satellite libraries at the Paramita and Nalanda campuses.

Job Duties:  

  • Responsible for maintaining college library standards.
  • Prepare and implement the annual departmental budget.
  • Supervise day-to-day operations, including circulation, electronic reserves, archival processing, scheduling, etc., of the library's main site at the Arapahoe campus and its two satellite libraries at the Paramita and Nalanda campuses.
  • Relate to other campus offices as necessary to keep current with new university developments.
  • Maintain a plan for data collection and reporting on patron satisfaction, utilization, etc.
  • Participate in Academic Council (faculty) meetings.
  • Provide regular reports to the Provost on operational and strategic matters, especially the library's ongoing efforts to preserve our audio archives collection.
  • Participate in faculty committee work and collaborate with faculty on developing policies and procedures for collection development, information literacy instruction, and archival priorities.
  • Network with other libraries, librarians, and organizations as necessary to keep current with library standards and practices, and represent the university regionally and nationally.
  • Provide Information Literacy Instruction to classes at all levels, graduate and undergraduate (between 15-20 one shot courses per semester).
  • Provide one-on-one research and reference service to students on all levels (varies up to 80 meetings per semester).
  • Perform original and complex cataloging on an as-needed basis, often for foreign language materials in Sanskrit and Tibetan.
  • Hire, train and supervise all library and archives staff.
  • Maintain the library's public website.
  • Manage the library's open source Integrated Library System (Koha).
  • Manage the library's open archiving system (ContentDM).
  • Manage access to online resources; manage proxy server.
  • Manage library acquisitions, including budgeting, acting as a liaison with faculty, and all purchasing.
  • Manage data and all aspects of assessment related to the library.
  • Coordinate access and usage of the Naropa Archives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Additional Info & Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • A Master of Library Science or Master of Library and Information Sciences from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and a sense of humor in working with students, faculty, staff, and co-workers.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and computer skills.
  • Considerable knowledge of print and electronic reference tools and techniques.
  • Considerable knowledge of instructional technologies.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with electronic archival processes and procedures.
  • Three years of practical library experience and two years of library management experience, or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with the operations of a small academic library, and a willingness to engage in all library activities as needed.
  • Knowledge of rules and processes related to cataloging and metadata standards (MARC, RDA, Dublin Core, etc.)
  • An understanding of the dynamics of privilege and oppression, and the impact these have on equity, access, and opportunity in higher education/the workplace.
  • Commitment to co-create an inclusive community and actively participate in related professional development, including openness to feedback and ongoing self-examination.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Second Master's degree in a field related to Naropa University curriculum.
  • Ability to catalog in Sanskrit and/or Tibetan.
  • Experience with Archives and Special Collections.
  • Six years of practical library experience and three years of library management experience, or equivalent.
