Job Description

The Arapahoe Library District is looking for a Senior Accountant to join our team. We are looking for someone having at least 5 years of accounting experience with 2 years of audit experience in a government, non-profit (or both!) organization. Are you passionate about the details?

Location: Support Services, 12855 E. Adam Aircraft Circle, Englewood, CO 80112

Reports to: Manager of Finance

Position: 40 hours, full-time, exempt position

Pay : $52,900-$79,380

Role: Performs advanced and specialized accounting assignments involving complex and confidential data.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

40% CLOSING PROCEDURES - Performs monthly and quarterly closing procedures by recording complex journal entries, reviewing general ledger accounts for accuracy and reconciling account balances. Performs analysis on reports for accuracy and clarifies and communicates results with management in order to produce accurate financial data for the Library District.

35% AUDIT - Assists with the annual audit process by meeting timelines established through a project plan, preparing audit work papers requested by the auditors , ensuring necessary year-end close procedures are performed timely and accurately, and acting as a liaison between the Library District and the auditors. Prepares the CAFR (Comprehensive Annual Financial Report) by compiling annual financial information in the format required by following all GASB and GAAP recommendations, and completing all required sections of the document in order to meet legal and regulatory requirements. Prepares annual financial statements for nonprofit component units in compliance with FASB.

20% OPERATIONS -  Provides work leadership and direction finance department staff for accurate and timely recording of information in the accounting software system following accrual accounting, GASB and FASB standards. Reviews accounting entries of other staff for accuracy and compliance with Library District policies and procedures.  Obtains and analyzes financial information to prepare reports, statements and recommendations.

5% TAX RETURN - Prepares Form 990 and accompanying schedules for nonprofit component unit ensuring timely and accurate reporting in compliance with IRS requirements.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, required.

Certified Public Accountant license, preferred.

Five years of accounting experience including 2 years of audit experience, required.

Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), required. 

Experience with fund-based accounting software, required. 

Government accounting experience, knowledge of GASB standards and governmental accounting policies and procedures, required.

Nonprofit accounting experience and knowledge of FASB standards as it relates to nonprofit organizations, required. 

Intermediate technology skills including Windows, Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, and Outlook, required.

A significant level of trust and diplomacy is required, in addition to normal courtesy and tact. Work may involve motivating or influencing others. Outside contacts are important and fostering sound relationships with other entities (companies and/or individuals) is necessary. 

Ability to ensure ethical standards are practiced in regard to financial management within the Library District. 

Ability to organize work, determine priorities, handle multiple tasks, and meet deadlines.

Ability to define and explain technical accounting procedures.                                              

Ability to work independently.

Duties and responsibilities include work that requires individuals to frequently sit at their workstation, carrying out mostly computerized work; occasional mobility around the office is required; work may include repetitive arm, hand and finger movements for computerized tasks.

Work is completed in an office environment, in a cubicle with computer desk.
