Job Description

The City of Durango is accepting applications for a Librarian Supervisor in Adult and Circulation Services.

$50,440 annually, plus excellent benefits.

The City of Durango Public Library seeks a creative and innovative Adult and Circulation Services Supervisor. The position requires strong team and leadership skills, programming and supervisory experience, knowledge of current library trends, collection development and technology, and excellent communication skills. This position oversees Adult Programming, Reference and Circulation. An MLS or MLIS from an ALA-accredited University is required, as well as four years of increasingly responsible, relevant professional library experience, including supervision and evaluation of staff.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Library Services Supervisor

Reports to: Assistant Library Director

General Purpose:

Management and supervision of Library staff, including assigning and reviewing their work; training and evaluation of Library staff; active involvement in the Library Management Team; act as the Supervisor in charge; demonstration of leadership and direction in areas of expertise and assigned responsibility; perform technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility; provide Reference and Advisory services; perform collection development; participation in all levels of Library work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Actively involved in the Library Management Team, providing leadership to all Library staff.
  2. Manage and supervise Library staff, including: developing and implementing training; assigning tasks and projects and reviewing their work; conducting evaluations; and enacting disciplinary measures.
  3. Recommend Library goals, objectives, and strategic plan initiatives. Lead or assist in the planning and implementation of said goals, objectives, and initiatives.
  4. Assist in the review and composition of Library policies and procedures, including interpreting them for staff and the public;
  5. Plan, conduct, direct, evaluate, schedule and coordinate programming in assigned areas of expertise and responsibility.
  6. Plan, promote, and conduct off-site services and programs.
  7. Plan and implement policies and procedures that address the needs of the Library and Library patrons.
  8. Prepare, implement, and monitor budget expenditures, including recommending budget allocations.
  9. Provide Reference and Advisory services for patrons of all ages.
  10. Develop and maintain collections.
  11. Develop and monitor content for web pages.
  12. Manage and refine work flow in areas of responsibility.
  13. Prepare statistical reports.
  14. Represent the Durango Public Library and the City of Durango on internal and external committees and groups.
  15. Provide friendly, proactive, and knowledgeable assistance to Library patrons at service desks and on the telephone, referring questions to Library Administration as needed.
  16. Circulation duties, including: issuing Library cards; checking materials in and out, including assisting patrons with these procedures; inspecting materials upon return for missing pieces or damage; changing the status of Library materials as needed; generating notices; and accepting payments for fines and fees.
  17. Assist Library patrons in using various equipment, including: computers; printers; scanners; self-check stations; automated library material return; computer reservation stations; photocopiers; and other devices provided by the Library.
  18. Assist Library patrons with electronic resources, such as: the Library catalog; databases; and downloadable materials.
  19. Provide assistance with Library provided software.
  20. Communicate effectively with team members orally and in writing, including via email.
  21. Assist in providing a secure environment for patrons, staff, and Library materials, contacting law enforcement as necessary.
  22. May serve as Acting Library Director in the absence of the Director and Assistant Director.

Specialized Duties and Responsibilities:

Librarian Supervisors are trained in various areas of expertise, and may be responsible for some or all of the following specialized functions:

  1. Coordinate and review materials acquisitions, cataloging, processing, and preservation.
  2. Develop and oversee the collection budget, along with monitoring the reconciliation of shipments and payment of invoices.
  3. Act as co-administrator of the Millennium integrated library system, including maintaining the integrity of the catalog.
  4. Establish and maintain positive vendor and community relations.
  5. Classify and catalog Library materials, creating original cataloging as needed.
  6. Plan and coordinate the Summer Reading Program for children and teens.
  7. Work with professional librarian staff on the selection and promotion of databases and other electronic services, including development of training for the public.
  8. Prepare, implement, and monitor the electronic resources budget;
  9. Coordinate reviewing and sorting material donations with the Friends of the Library.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position may supervise the following positions: Librarian I; Paralibrarian; Library Assistant II; Library Assistant I; Library Page; volunteers.

Job Qualifications

Education or Formal Training and Licenses:

Masters of Library Science/Information Science degree from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association.

Experience:

Four years of increasingly responsible, relevant professional Library experience, including the management of staff.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge and Application of:

  • Principles of positive, friendly customer service;
  • Methods and techniques for locating Library materials;
  • Cataloging and classification systems, including the Dewey Decimal System;
  • Standard Reference sources in the Library field;
  • Library-provided databases;
  • Current literature and new developments in library science;
  • Computer hardware and software, including Microsoft Office;
  • Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations.
