Job Description

Fort Vancouver Regional Library District (FVRL) is looking for an enthusiastic and committed Branch Manager to provide leadership at our Goldendale Community Library, one of 15 libraries throughout our district. Goldendale Community Library is housed in a beautiful 15,660 sq foot Carnegie building in Goldendale, WA. The building features two floors and a basement in addition to an outdoor amphitheater.

The Branch Manager is involved in the day-to-day operations of the branch as well as serving as the face of the library district within Klickitat County, helping lead community outreach and relationship building within the many rural communities in the area. The Branch Manager leads and develops a diverse team of nine employees and works with library staff at all levels throughout Fort Vancouver Regional Library District. Program development, branch management, and the ability to build community partnerships are key to this role.

The primary responsibilities of the position are managing the branch and Klickitat County Bookmobile service along with a branch supervisor, serving the public, conducting programming, and attending community events as the library representative with the help of a part-time Klickitat County outreach librarian who works under the Outreach and Community Partnership Division. Because of the rural nature of this community library, the Branch Manager must be willing to drive long distances.

The Branch Manager will have a great opportunity to oversee a planned interior remodel in the fall which will accentuate the original beauty and enhance the functionality of the library building. He/she will actively work to create and cultivate community relationships with the Friends of the Library, a City Library Advisory Board, school districts, and county and city government officials. Because of its proximity to White Salmon Valley Community Library, the two branches work closely together to develop outreach strategies and service priorities for the sparsely populated and vastly distant communities spanning over 1,800 square miles in Klickitat County’s incorporated and unincorporated areas.

Additional Info & Requirements

FVRL is excited to find candidates for Goldendale Community Library Branch Manager who have these qualifications:

  • An MLS or equivalent and certification by the Washington State Board for Certification of Librarians or the ability to obtain certification at time of appointment
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of related work experience, with customer service experience

Our ideal candidate would also have:

  • Experience working with community groups, library Friends groups and community stakeholders
  • Two (2) to five (5) years of supervisory experience, with experience managing people and/or projects
  • A strong commitment to creatively providing library services in remote and rural areas

The Community

Goldendale is the county seat of Klickitat County in south-central Washington state. This traditional rural community is located about 120 miles east of Vancouver, Washington; 100 miles east of Portland, Oregon; and 70 miles south of Yakima, Washington. Service population is about 7,500 for Goldendale and an additional 5,500 for the bookmobile. Total Klickitat County’s population is about 21,000 with major economy in the areas of wheat farming, fruit orchards and cattle ranching. Cattle drives on horseback still happen twice yearly. Wineries and alternative energy, like wind and hydropower, are also important to the local economy. Nearby cultural attractions include Maryhill Museum, Gorge Discovery Center, and Goldendale Observatory State Park.

While the county boasts no shopping malls or “big box” stores, those and other services are available within an hour’s drive. Goldendale is a fantastic location for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy hiking, cycling, horseback riding, star-gazing, white-water rafting, skiing, boating, and windsurfing. The wide-open spaces of Klickitat County boast some of the most unique and diverse topography and climate, from dry, desert steppe in the east to snow-capped mountains and dense forests in the west, and one-of-akind geologic features like the Columbia River Gorge and Yakima basalts.
