Job Description

Springville Public Library is located in the heart of Springville, Utah, a community known for its arts and culture. Serving a community of 31,000 citizens, the library strives to transform lives through a world of knowledge, discovery, and imagination. This is achieved through a variety of platforms, including access to a vast collection of physical and digital resources, and a variety of community events for all ages. The community has shown consistent support for the library, with 1,100 daily visitors and 618,000 items circulated annually.

Springville Public Library is seeking to fill the position of Senior Librarian. Under the supervision of the Library Director, this position is responsible for the supervision and training of staff, patron reference, computer maintenance and assistance, collection development, and to plan, present, and market library programming. This position is second-in-command at the library and fills in for the Library Director during absences. The ideal candidate is an idea-oriented team leader who is willing to embrace and further the vision that the library has established. Ultimately, the library is seeking an energetic employee who is passionate about libraries and patron service.

Examples of Duties

  • Supervises, hires, trains, and evaluates staff.
  • Serves as a role model for less experienced librarians by demonstrating specialized expertise and knowledge.
  • Provides comprehensive reference, research, and advisory public services.
  • Gives instruction to staff and library users on the content, nature, and use of library resources including paper materials, the Internet and online databases, library catalog, downloads, and prevalent mobile apps. 
  • Ability to navigate and teach popular software platforms in both the desktop and tablet format.
  • Develops and balanced current collection in all formats by selecting and assessing materials that meet community needs within the framework of the library mission including authoritative evaluations and recommendations utilizing professional and social site reviews.
  • Has purchasing authority for library and collections.
  • May create, prepare, and implement library programs, including teaching computer classes.
  • Maintains an awareness of professional trends, methods, and ethics.
  • Stays abreast of advancing technology and its library applications.
  • Works with IT department in functionality of ILS, automated check in and check out, public and staff computers, and website.
  • May oversee, manage, and/or purchase library specific software.
  • Collaborates with area schools, public and government organizations in promoting literacy and library services.
  • Assists in ongoing needs and assessment, marketing, planning and review of library services.
  • Participates in major projects as required, including capital campaigns, marketing and public relations.
  • Represents the library and makes financial decisions with minimum supervision.
  • Prepares and submits reports and completes projects at the request of the director.
  • Develops and/or assists with implementation of a pilot program or new projects/services, as appropriate.
  • Contributes in the development and implementation of the library’s budget, policies, procedures, goals and objectives, and personnel policies.
  • Maintains social media presence.
  • Searches for, writes and implements grants.
  • Maintains professional knowledge through workshops, meetings, membership in professional organizations, and reading current literature. 
  • Acts for the Library Director in instances of absence. 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of computer hardware and software.

Physical Demands

Performs duties that may include moderate physical effort such as lifting, bending and stooping.  Requires standing and/or walking for up to four hours at a time according to the Library’s “roving reference” type services.  Occasionally may lift materials up to 40 pounds.

Qualifications 

Must have a Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited school and at least 3 years library experience with 2 years being in a supervisory position. Must be adaptable to changing work hours. Must be willing to work some evenings and Saturdays.
