Job Description

Don’t just tell stories, experience them! Here in Nederland, wild animals aren’t just in picture books, you’ll see foxes and moose on the trails and near the library. There are days – sometimes in April or May! – when you can snowshoe or ski in town. And that quiet parent in storytime? There’s a good chance that they’re a leading scientist or a well-known musician. Working in a small town is not unlike a jigsaw puzzle: as you get to know people and learn how their stories fit together, your understanding of the community deepens.

We recently completed a new strategic plan, after doing a community survey. We reaffirmed that the focus of our programming is early literacy alongside programs for elementary aged children and teens. We are seeking a Youth Services Coordinator who will create memorable learning experiences through programming. The ideal candidate will foster a welcoming environment and connect with our community’s children and teens. You’ll have a lot of flexibility and also the resources to support you: wonderful staff and volunteers, engaged parents, a great facility and stable funding.

An effective Youth Services Coordinator will have knowledge of children’s literature and know that giving the right book, at the right time, to the right child, can be transformative. They will have experience planning, carrying out and evaluating programs for a range of ages. And they will be familiar with both the work required and the resulting joy that comes from creating community through outreach and relationship building.

Additional Info & Requirements

Required

  • An understanding of the theories of infant, child and adolescent learning and development and their implications for library services.
  • Knowledge of children’s literature. Knowledge of teen and tween literature and graphic novels or the ability to acquire that knowledge.
  • Experience planning, managing and implementing children’s programming to completion, within budget and deadlines; revising and adjusting existing projects and programs to meet objectives; multi-tasking and effectively coordinating a variety of concurrent projects and activities.
  • Experience assessing the diverse needs, preferences and resources of a community on a regular and systematic basis.

Preferred

  • At least one year of professional library experience as a children’s librarian.
  • Experience creating STEAM programming for youths.

The Community

Nederland, Colorado is perched in the Rocky Mountains at 8,200 feet with a community of about 3,500 people (1,500 town population, 2,000 in the surrounding area). It has a history rich in mining and music. It is surrounded by National Forests and wilderness areas, so whatever your outdoor passions are, you can find them here. Yet it is close enough to “civilization” that it is possible to ski fresh tracks in the morning, have lunch in Boulder and then visit a museum or catch a symphony in Denver. The local elementary school has nearly 300 students and the local middle/high school 250. There are a couple preschools and also a fair number of homeschoolers. The library had over 50,000 visits last year.
