Library Director
The Salina Public Library is seeking a Library Director who is an innovative, energetic and community-minded leader. The ideal candidate will provide leadership that produces positive relationships with the public, the library’s partners in the community and library staff.
Our collection is composed of more than 280,000 items; approximately 500,000 items are circulated annually.
Essential qualities include:
- Strong fiscal/budgeting skills
- Strong communications and people skills
- Knowledge of public library administration
- The ability to prepare clear and concise written communication
- Strategic thinking
- A creative collaborative approach to service
- The ability to hire, train and motivate key staff
- Prior experience reporting to a governing board and public library administrative experience
Position Description
The Library Director oversees the daily operation of the library; orientation of and advising the Board of Trustees; planning and evaluation of services; policy development and implementation; budget development and management; decision making on personnel along with Department Heads; collection development direction; public relations and programs; staff training and continuing education; hiring and evaluation of department heads; coordination of all operations. The Salina Public Library’s mission is: Connecting people to information, learning and culture.
With a annual budget of more than $3 million and strong community support, the library employs a staff of 32 full-time and 19 part-time employees. In addition to the traditional role a library plays in a community, the Salina Public Library is also home to the Community Learning and Skill Sharing (CLASS) program. CLASS includes approximately 130 classes and 2000 participants annually. The Salina Public Library is independent of the City of Salina; the Library Director reports directly to the Library Board of Trustees and creates a budget independent of the City of Salina.

Required Education and Experience
A Masters in Library Science degree and a minimum of five years public library managerial/supervisory experience.
Salary range and Benefits
Starting annual salary range is $75,000 to $80,000, depending on skills and experience. There is an excellent benefit package which includes Kansas Public Employees Retirement program, health, dental and prescription plan, paid holidays, sick and vacation leave.
