Job Description

Under general supervision, exercises independent judgment and professional expertise in the day-to-day administration, personnel management, and work flow of the library.  Position is responsible for the technical service programs of the library.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Assists in the management of library operations and administration.  Supervises librarians, library assistants, library aides and other assigned staff.  Participates in the hiring of staff; supervises, trains, motivates, conducts performance evaluations and works to correct deficiencies through coaching and progressive disciplinary action.  Indirectly supervises other library staff including planning/organizing workload/staff assignments.  Meets with staff to identify and resolve problems.  As a working supervisor participates in the work performed throughout the Library as needed.
 
Responsible for cataloging of library materials.  Maintains and ensures information on the Prescott Valley Public Library web page and social media platforms is current.  Assists in the supervision of the Integrated Library System (ILS) and related procedures, the Automated Materials Handling (AMH) system, as well as planning for future library automation in line with the Yavapai Library Network.
 
Trains staff and patrons in various software applications.  Maintains a positive working relationship with vendors such as the department's collection agency.  Ensures confidentiality of patron records is protected.
 
Participates in the development of the annual budget and monitors ongoing expenditures in assigned areas.  Ensures assigned areas are managed in accordance with budget guidelines.  Assists with grant administration and the Request for Proposal (RFP) processes.  Reviews and approves personnel timesheets, purchase orders and other financial records.
 
Participates in the development and implementation of department goals, objectives, and priorities with direct planning responsibilities for programs and functional areas assigned.  Ensures current library policies are followed and makes suggestions for changes to established policies and procedures.
 
Coordinates acquisitions and processing of library materials.  Works with library staff and researches library material using the Internet, Library Journals and other resources.  Makes recommendations for the selection and evaluation of library materials. 
 
Presents to professional and community groups.  Performs the full range of professional librarian duties as required.  Serves as acting library director as needed.  Evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATION:

Requires Bachelor's Degree in Business, Public Administration or closely related area.  Master's Degree in Library Science (MLS) preferred.  Must have at least four (4) years full time professional library work including two (2) years at the supervisory level.  Or, any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
