Job Description

Description of Job: This position (#GCA-08119-0817 SERIALS LIBRARIAN) exists to manage and provide access to the serials in the collection through management of the newspaper program including: microfilming,  processing reproduction orders, and managing the program budget; preparing serials in the collection for access and preservation; and identifying and soliciting titles in consultation with the Curator of Archives.  The Serials Librarian also provides reference and reading room support and patron service. The Serials Librarian works as part of History Colorado to augment public understanding of and appreciation for Colorado history and to provide public access to collection resources.  

1) Collections Management:  Check-in and processing of newspapers and other serials; maintaining accurate and thorough records of locations, holdings, and status; processing and fulfilling microfilm orders; re-housing serials as needed to address preservation concerns, collating and delivering newspapers to the microfilm service facility; performing microform quality inspection and control; inventorying the serials collection, managing the budget allocated to support the serials collection; and working with the Curator of Archives and/or cataloger to insure holdings are documented and accessible through online databases. In consultation with the Curator of Archives, the Serials Librarian also makes recommendations for acquisitions works to ensure that a representative scope of Colorado serials is collected. 

2) Collection Access: Works with Curatorial and Collections Management  staff to develop solutions to make serials archiving more efficient and cost effective and to improve public access to the collection through traditional and digital means.  Activities in this area serve to increase public access to the collection  in support of institutional goals. Tasks include developing partnerships with other agencies, and content publishers; grant writing and management, exploring and implementing methods to preserve born digital serials content; and/or the conversion of content from one format to another (For example, microfilm to digital media and vice-versa).

3) Reference and Reading Room Visitor Support:  Responsible for independently researching collections in fulfillment of patron research requests including in person, by phone, by mail, online, and fee-based research. Participates in collecting research and use statistics for library resources and outreach programs. Supports library activities through courteous customer service including reference desk service, registering, and orienting reading room visitors; advising on historical research and collection contents; identifying and pulling collection materials; and instructing patrons in the use of reference materials and library access machines. Assists with opening and closing the reading room and monitoring patron use of the collection. 

Additional Info & Requirements

Required:

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution
  • Experience in a library, special collection, or archive with strong emphasis on customer service
  • Knowledge of library and archive best practices is requiredMust be able to work Tuesday through Saturday schedule.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing with vendors, patrons, and colleagues; to meet deadlines; and to work as a team member
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds repeatedly.

Additional Requirements: Successful candidate must pass a criminal history background check prior to hire.
