Job Description

Are you passionate about all-inclusive libraries? Do you care about helping new immigrants find their place in our society and become good citizens? Do you love to travel, read foreign books and watch foreign movies? Are you a master of multicultural advisory? Then read on! We are looking for an enthusiastic champion for multiculturalism. The successful candidate will be skillful in providing assistance to our multilingual and multicultural populations, well informed about world literature and cinema and eager to share this knowledge with our patrons.

Position: 40 hour, full-time; exempt.

Pay Rate: $47,476-$62,800

Role: Assists patrons with advanced search and advisory needs and develops multicultural library programs and services.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

80%  PROGRAMS AND SERVICE - Provides library tours and class visits to ESL students and English Conversation Circles, maintains New American page on ALD website. Conducts Book-a-Librarian sessions, answers hunt group questions. Produces library programs for multicultural patrons, as well as programs promoting multiculturalism for general population. Provides advisory services on popular translated fiction and nonfiction, international music and cinema.

10%  OUTREACH - Liaisons with multicultural community groups and facilitates partnerships with other community service agencies by meeting with representatives and encouraging community participation in the library in order to promote use of library services.

10%  STAFF TRAINING AND BRANCH LIAISON - Develops trainings to improve the knowledge, skill and ability of paraprofessional staff. Provides informal mentoring to branch staff by participating in staff meetings and outreaching to staff in order to reinforce information received at the formal trainings.

Qualifications:

Two to five years of similar or related experience, required.

MLS or MLIS degree, required.

Ability to work varying shifts, including evenings and weekends, required.

Advanced technology skills for Windows, Word, Excel and Outlook, required.

Intermediate skills in Sierra, preferred.

Fluency in a foreign language, preferred.

Ability to be mobile 100% of the time and sit as needed; ability to bend, stoop, reach, and push a loaded wheeled book truck weighing up to 100 pounds, 10% of the time, required. 

Wide erudition and general interest in world literature, cinema and politics.

Experience with developing and conducting instructional programs and services.

Development of multi-cultural programs. Ability to focus on the customer, show integrity, be inclusive, enjoy learning and have fun.

Ability to exercise confidence and excitement in the vast technological and online resources the Library District has available.

Ability to successfully work with varying demographics, required.

Passionate about the mission of public libraries. Comfortable with the principles of intellectual freedom.
