Job Description

Under general supervision, process and shelve library materials in an accurate and efficient manner. Maintains the general order of library materials within the facility and performs associated circulation functions and activities in support of library services. 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Strive to create the best possible customer experience for patrons by embodying the Boulder Public Library Customer Service Philosophy in conjunction with shelving and maintaining  all library materials and collections. Tasks include sorting and shelving in alphabetical or numerical order in designated sections of the Central branch library. 



2. Operates and monitors the Automated Materials Handling System as materials are returned. Troubleshoots any mechanical or computer related issues. Determines and contacts the appropriate staff person when assistance is necessary. Assesses exceptions material and takes appropriate, corrective action to discharge these items. 



3. Discharges library materials returned to the library. Identifies and separates materials for delivery to other branches of the Boulder Public Library System, Flatirons Library Consortium, and the Colorado Library Consortium.  



4. Unpacks, discharges, processes holds, and sorts materials delivered from the branches of the Boulder Public Library System, Flatirons Library Consortium, and the Colorado Library Consortium.   



5. Retrieves paged items for local requests, requests made by the Flatiron Consortium, Prospector libraries, MOBIUS libraries, SWIFT libraries, and inter-library loan requests.

 

6. Process reserved materials to be picked up by patrons or, to be delivered to other libraries. 



7.  Checks public areas for materials off the shelves. Collects materials and returns them to the appropriate shelves. Maintains order on shelves. 



8. Identifies and separates returned materials needing repair and routes these items to the appropriate staff person or work group. 

 

9. Prioritizes daily tasks and responsibilities and adapts and adjusts as needed to meet customer service expectations relating to the materials handling responsibilities.

 

10. Consistently demonstrates a professional, courteous and respectful attitude towards all patrons, in a variety of patron service situations.

 

11. Demonstrates a professional, inclusive, cooperative, team-oriented working relationship with staff, co-workers, and volunteers.



12. Other: 
 

  • Performs related duties as required to meet the needs of the city.
  • Takes proper safety precautions to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures. Reports all accidents and damage to city property.
  • Responsible for knowing and complying with all city and department policies; participating in professional trainings and development; and adhering to attendance and workplace attire policies.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Understanding of and expertise in alphabetical and numerical order functions. Ability to demonstrate speed and accuracy in alphabetizing and numeric order. Work experience demonstrating dependability, punctuality, and precision. Ability to operate a personal computer by navigating the Internet, using email, word processing, and basic database programs. Must be able to learn and become proficient with equipment and software programs as required to effectively and efficiently perform assigned duties.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS – In addition to the required minimum qualifications: 

Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System. Ability to communicate in at least one language other than English, or proficiency in Braille and/or sign language.
