Job Description

The Director of Public Services provides leadership and strategic visioning for Information Literacy, Information Services, Reference Services and Access Services. This position is responsible for developing Library-wide user-centered public services standards and best practices. The Director supervises tenure track faculty librarians and professional staff.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead, plan, manage and coordinate Kent Library’s public services units
    • Oversee Information Literacy and Information Services; including library instruction and the library/academic department liaison program
    • Oversee Reference services; including in-person, virtual and online references assistance and research consultations
    • Oversee Access Services; including circulation, reserves, collection maintenance, and resource sharing, interlibrary loan and document delivery
    • Liaise with University Information Technology on Kent Library’s student computer lab
  • Promote and provide expert guidance on Kent Library’s services, resources and spaces
  • Ensure high quality user services and foster an inclusive learning environment for users
  • Provide leadership on information literacy concepts, trends, pedagogies and assessment
  • Evaluate and assimilate new teaching methods and changing student learning styles in a rapidly evolving, information driven environment
  • Hire, train and evaluate public services faculty and staff in accordance with Library and University policies
  • Participate in the overall development, management and assessment of library services and collections
  • Provides leadership in the assessment of information, reference and access services
  • Coordinate and support a work environment that allows all employees to actively contribute to the successful operation of Kent Library for all users
  • Serve as liaison librarian to assigned academic departments; liaison activities include: building and maintaining close relations with students and faculty in order to meet their learning, teaching and research needs through information literacy instruction, communication, program development, information sharing, collection development and information gathering
  • Create digital learning materials; such as LibGuidesTM or video tutorials
  • Provide research assistance in-person, online, or by telephone and share in the chat and reference desk staffing rotation; may occasionally include nights and weekends
  • Maintain confidentiality of library users, library records and university information
  • Assist in creating, developing, documenting and maintaining public services policies and procedures and administrative guidelines and processes
  • Make recommendations in areas such as library policy formulation, budget management and short- and long-range planning
  • Participate in work related to the library management system as appropriate
  • Maintain an awareness of and respond appropriately to users issues; consulting with the dean as needed
  • Contribute to the library management team and library committees, activities, and outreach, and to Southeast Missouri State University through faculty governance, committees, councils, and other working groups
  • Ability to successfully lead and complete a wide range of projects
  • Establish and maintain a personal professional development program consistent with promotion, tenure, and post-professorial review

Required Qualifications

  • ALA accredited Master’s degree
  • Minimum of three years of experience as professional librarian; experience in an academic library public services area a plus
  • Minimum of two years of experience in a supervisory, management or leadership role
  • Experience with or demonstrated knowledge of information literacy, reference services and/or access services functions
  • Strong user centered public services philosophy
  • Demonstrated commitment to the use of new information technologies
  • Experience with planning, delivering or assessing information literacy education
  • Knowledge, or awareness of, current trends in library services, resources and spaces
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse student body and a diverse faculty throughout the University
  • Evidence of effective written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to work well as a member of a group and individually
  • Demonstrated commitment to collegiality when interacting with others within the University community
  • Demonstrated commitment to a diverse work environment, including working with multi-cultural populations and an understanding of, and sensitivity to, issues affecting women and minorities
