Job Description

Under the supervision of the Collection Manager, this professional librarian I level position will participate in the development and maintenance of the library’s local history collection, supports and implements special programs/events and provides customer service at the library’s public service points.

  • Makes local history collections accessible through the development and maintenance of catalogs, finding aids and digitization of the collection
  • Assists individuals and groups with access to the local history materials
  • Provides one-on-one research assistance for customers
  • Pursues grant funding for the processing, conservation and imaging of the local history collection
  • Oversees volunteers and interns working with the local history collection
  • Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of public library principles, reference and reader’s advisory service expertise and library operations
  • Researches reference questions, including those of a difficult or involved nature
  • Maintains a current knowledge of books, authors, and trends in libraries
  • Instructs customers in the use of library resources and technology
  • Plans and presents programs and workshops for adults
  • Develops and implements training for staff in the reference and reader’s advisory
  • Establishes good relationships and outreach with local historical societies or genealogical groups
  • Embraces innovation and experimentation
  • MLS/MLIS strongly preferred
  • Spanish language skills  preferred

KNOWLEDGE:  Knowledge of basic library principles, trends, functions, and procedures and knowledge and understanding of issues and requirements of the specific library program assigned.
SKILL:  Excellent customer service skills; management skills including project management skills.  Skill in using technology and offering assistance to users.
ABILITY:  Creatively solve problems, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner; communicate clearly, both orally and in writing; work with diverse groups of customers and volunteers of all ages; create and maintain positive staff relationships; lead effectively by example, inspire staff, and promote enthusiastic teamwork; demonstrate positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and a sense of humor in working with customers, coworkers, and the community; multi-task and set priorities; demonstrate innovation and flexibility; work varying shifts, including evenings and weekends.
TRAINING:  Bachelor's degree required.  Master's Degree in Library Science preferred.
EXPERIENCE:  Three years previous work experience in a library setting (public library experience preferred) or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the jobs.
